With the recent passage of the Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, which includes the best incentives for solar power in a generation, the key elements are now in place for unprecedented growth in residential solar adoption.
Akeena Solar Inc., one of the nation's leading designers and installers of solar power systems (NASDAQ: AKNS), is working to educate the public about the benefits of installing solar power, including a 30 percent tax credit for homeowners.
“Finally, the federal government has implemented a set of policies that will spur the long-term growth of the solar industry,” said Barry Cinnamon, CEO of Akeena Solar. “Our customers can now achieve a payback on their solar investment in five years instead of 10, with a 20 percent return on investment. In today's uncertain economy, rooftop solar power may be the very best investment a homeowner can make.”
An eight-year extension of the federal investment tax credit and the removal of the $2,000 limitation for residential installations will drastically decrease the cost of solar for homeowners. The solar tax credits, first introduced in 2005, have been instrumental in encouraging the expansion of the industry.
Akeena has been installing solar systems since 2001 and began with one office in Northern California. In the past two years, Akeena has seen the number of offices it operates grow from one to 10, which serve California, Connecticut, Colorado, New York, New Jersey and Hawaii.
“We've been in this industry since the beginning. We've seen where it's been, and now we are excited to guide its future as more and more people make the switch to clean, renewable, and now more affordable solar power,” Cinnamon said.
In response to increasing demand, Akeena has launched several new community solar program initiatives in various locations around the nation, including Carlsbad and the surrounding areas. This builds on Akeena's proven community program model, which recently saw more than 30 new residential installations in less than 60 days in the Northern California city of Livermore.
Scheduled to run through Nov. 30, the program educates homeowners and helps them take advantage of federal and state incentives. Akeena provides a free solar evaluation of the property and reviews old electricity bills to make sure that solar is the right choice.
Then, Akeena designs a custom system to suit each homeowner's needs, files and manages all of the utility and municipal paperwork and covers the rebate costs so the customer doesn't have to wait. Akeena also offers thousands of dollars in discounts to homeowners in qualifying areas.
“Our phones are ringing nonstop with homeowners across Southern California interested in finding out how they can put solar on their roofs,” said Kevin Blake, community program manager for Akeena in Southern California. “Drastically rising electricity prices have homeowners eager to make a change.”
