Green Dragon Tavern & Museum takes top spot in local cooking competition

The Green Dragon Tavern & Museum’s Executive Chef Gregory Krol and Sous Chef Benjamin McBrien took home the 2016 “Best of the Fest” Honors at Encinitas’ Foodie Fest earlier this month.

The team competed against five other restaurants in a Food Network “Chopped” television show-styled format at the highly attended event.

“We were thrilled to be a part of Foodie Fest Encinitas and support Cystic Fibrosis research. It was really great to come together and cook in a fun and food focused event,” said Krol. “Ben and I considered it an honor to compete with such talented North County chefs and demonstrate what they bring to the table. Thanks to the over 1,000 locals in attendance, the judges, sponsors and Wabisabi Green for making this such an incredible event for the community. We look forward to Foodie Fest 2017!”

Chef Gregory’s winning dish was a Curry Carrot Duck Breast with Forbidden Sticky Rice and Ghost Chili Salami Braised Carrots plated on grey slate.

The competition was complete with mystery basket ingredients such as porcini mushrooms or ghost pepper salami. Each chef had 30 minutes to prepare and plate their dishes judged by industry panel experts: Ryan Jubela, James Montejano, Andrew Spurgin, Jarnard Sutton and Catt Fields White.

The Encinitas Foodie Fest is an annual event that features sustainable locally sourced food, artisanal products and premiere San Diego talent.

Proceeds from the festival support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
