Carlsbad's nearly 20 year effort to construct an 18-hole championship golf course has finally reached a more concrete phase of development. Throughout the month of June, the City of Carlsbad will be accepting and reviewing bids for the construction of its newest facility, the Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course, located at the intersection of Palomar Airport Road and Hidden Valley Road.

The construction of the almost 400-acre course will be divided into three phases which include mass grading, course construction, and building construction. Current projections estimate construction will be completed by summer of 2007. The city estimates construction costs alone will fall around $37 million.

John Cahill, municipal projects manager for the City of Carlsbad, said advertisements for the three construction projects have been placed in local trade publications as well as on the Internet.

"The decision of whether the municipal golf course moves forward or not is really dependent on the bids that start coming in," stated Cynthia Haas, Economic Development Director for the city on where happens next in the process. "If the bids coming in are high, then the council may decide to ratchet back on some of the higher priced items to save money, but we'll just have to cross that bridge when we get to it."

The Carlsbad City Council plans to review the proposed bids during July, determining the fate of the long sought after municipal golf course project at that time. If the bids are good, construction is scheduled to begin this fall. However, if they are not, then the city will be forced to make some tough decisions.
City Councilman Matt Hall said that cost for the proposed course is an issue for the council, "We are optimistic about the bids, however, this project comes at a time when there are a lot of projects that are up for approval for funding. Hall also said that public support is still strong but "once you start talking about price and how much it's going to cost, then there is some concern."
"There's still a desire to do this," stated Haas. "It just comes down to a question of at what cost?"
