For the first time, early-stage life sciences companies can access a free Web posting service to find research and development space under 5,000 square feet, a critical component in their ability to launch the research phase of their product development. The Burnham Life Sciences Group, a specialty arm of Burnham Real Estate, launched a free Web page dedicated solely to the posting of small incubator lab space.
"The space requirements for young biotech companies are challenging in that they need facilities that can accommodate their research, but generally at a size that is too small to be listed," said Brent Jacobs, senior vice president of Burnham Real Estate's Life Sciences Group. "Of the 15 million square feet of lab space in San Diego County, nearly all of the available space is 10,000 square feet or larger, far more than the 1,000 to 3,000 square feet of wet lab space typically required by start up companies. Most space in this size range tends to be sublease or incubator space that is not being used by the larger, established biotech companies. Unfortunately, there has not been a way to effectively promote these space opportunities, until now."
