Hotel Hotspot: Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort
By Erika Finch-McCaffrey
Tourists flock to the Village of Carlsbad for its five miles of pristine coastline, unique shops, 25 fabulous restaurants, and, more and more, its many hotel accommodations. The Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort, a Chamber member since 1984, was one of the first beach-front properties in the area and continues to thrive.
The boutique hotel, located at 3075 Carlsbad Boulevard, recently completed a renovation which included new furniture, carpet and drapes as well as a refurbished lobby, library and meeting space, said Caroleann Petz, director of sales and marketing. The 62-room hotel has a 100 percent occupancy rate in the summer and Petz said many of those vacationers are from right here in San Diego (along with the requisite "Zonies," of course).
"The nicest vacations are the ones where you don't have to pack when you go away," Petz said.
The property also has 132 timeshare units, a pool and spa, and an exercise room. They employ a staff of 62 and rates run from $185 to $275 per night. Most rooms have balconies and some have kitchenettes, fireplaces and spas. Smoking and non-smoking rooms are available. The hotel's 1,000 square feet of meeting space hosts numerous board meetings, family reunions and sales meetings, said Petz.
The land was originally owned by Albert Cohn, a Danish immigrant credited for developing much of Carlsbad. Cohn owned 4.5 acres of land that encompasses the present-day hotel and shopping center. According to Sherie Ordway, the inn's human resources manager, Fidel's Mexican Restaurant occupies a portion of the original house, including the living room. A small chapel was also on-site and one of Carlsbad Inn's employee's parents was married at the chapel.
Ordway said the resort has had its share of celebrity guests over the years. Movie stars such as Farrah Fawcett have enjoyed the inn's charm as have athletes and politicians from neighboring states.
