Maintaining utopia: 2005 State of the City luncheon
By Jessica Mikasa
Mayor Claude A. "Bud" Lewis, the Carlsbad City Council, and other Carlsbad officials updated residents and business professional on the city's progress and development at the annual State of the City Luncheon held at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara on August 11.
The luncheon, which was co-sponsored by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, Carlsbad developer Bressi Ranch and Poseidon Resources Corporation, attracted more than 480 people eager to learn of the city's progress and upcoming developmental plans.
With the aid of a 25-minute video entitled "Keeping the Promise," Lewis discussed several topics including the city's growth management plan, recent road openings, planned public projects, open space, beaches and volunteer spirit. Lewis also touched upon the city's long sought after municipal golf course, which developers are expected to begin working on next month, in addition to the recently settled three-pool complex now under construction in Carlsbad's Alga Norte Park.
Lewis also took some time out prior to showing the video to address two other pressing topics. The fist item was the upcoming 50th Congressional District race. Lewis urged his constituents to carefully review the qualifications of each of the candidates running for the open congressional seat.
"This is a very important position for us," Lewis stated. "You want to take a lot of time to put the right person in office."
Mayor Lewis then went on to promote a project that he "feels very strongly about," the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, a cause that raises funds to aid and support the families of wounded Marines. His own personal campaign to encourage other local governments to support the fund has thus far raised over $50,000.
In closing, the mayor and the luncheon's sponsors thanked everyone for coming, noting that maintaining Carlsbad's reputation of "Utopia" would require the cooperation and patience of the whole community.
"I feel very good about Carlsbad, what has happened in the past and what will happen in the future," Lewis said.
The State of the City video will air on Adelphia Cable TV Channel 3 every Monday at 8 p.m. and every Tuesday at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. through late November.
