Artists make a splash at third annual festival
Over 100 chalk artists will converge on Armada Drive in Carlsbad September 24, 25 for ArtSplash 2005, transforming the street into an asphalt art gallery. The festival also features live entertainment, food and a fine-art competition with 40 juried artists exhibiting stone and bronze sculptures, glass art, custom jewelry, paintings, and pottery.
This year's featured artists are Ron Juncal and Lucy Chamberlain. Juncal (who owns Studio 2 in Carlsbad) and his team of chalk artists will create an image of dolphins and divers, the focal piece of the chalk art display. Chamberlain, the featured artist in the fine art category, will display her amazing glass creations inspired by the ocean.
A children's area will include demonstrations by balloon master Ken Stillman, lively storytellers, wandering performers and talented face painters. Throughout the two-day event, children and adults will enjoy entertainment by The Fabulous Earrings, magician Joel Ward, juggler Bobby Hartman, Buddhist drummers Shokenji Taiko, percussion movement performers CREW, Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame Orchestra, and rock band 40 Proof.
Admission to the event is free with $5 parking available. The festival, which takes place on Armada Drive between Palomar Airport Road and Cannon Drive, is open each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more details, visit www.carlsbadartsplash.org or call (760) 436-2828.
