Who would you trust to run your business, be president of the Carlsbad Chamber or mayor of the city in twenty years?

All good CEOs and managers are constantly looking to identify, train and equip the next generation of leaders for their business. The process is critical to ensure success and continuity in the business world.

The next generation of leadership for the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce could come from a building that doesn't exist now but needs to. As chamber leaders, I hope you'll agree part of our job is to make sure the next generation has all the opportunity for success we enjoy.

Today, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is providing academic, social and career skills to hundreds of young men and women in our community. Their mission is to provide activities and experiences that enrich the lives of young people, inspiring and enabling them to reach their full potential. There is little doubt some of those kids will be starting and running businesses of their own in ten to twenty years right here in our city.

To help these future leaders succeed, the Club is expanding with a state-of-the-art clubhouse on the drawing board. Slated to break ground in 2006, the new branch has a total price tag of $6 million. To date, the Club is halfway towards their goal.

A number of leading Carlsbad Chamber members and community leaders have made significant donations to the new branch. Today, I am asking you to join the list of contributors to make the dream a reality. The need is pressing and the rewards will be so fulfilling.

There are multiple ways that large and small chamber members can make a difference. For example, how about a group of small chamber businesses banding together in a challenge match? Engage in friendly competition to meet or beat your donation. Offer some unique prizes that you might secure from another chamber member to sweeten the pot. (Since my company is in the hotel business, we will help you with a complimentary one or two night stay for the winners. Find a chamber member with a day spa, then get a restaurant to donate a dinner and you've got a valuable prize package!)

Another option would be to host a small fundraiser and invite your vendors and customer base to attend. The Club would be more than willing to send a guest speaker from the board of directors or their executive staff to speak at your event. I know from personal experience how convincing my friend and Club board member Dave Kulchin can be when he gets behind a mission like this. He is inspiring.

A third option might involve product and materials instead of cash. The Club will require office equipment, sports and recreation items, printing services, food and beverage and a long list of services you might consider 'adopting' in order to help them open the doors of the new branch. Time, money and material are all valuable contributions in this effort. You can be confident the money will be used in a positive way. In addition, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad was named the #1 Club in the nation by Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 2004.

There are several key aspects of the Club that make it unique in the world of children's services. The Club is open when kids need it?every day after school and during school breaks. It is managed by professionally trained staff dedicated to kids. The programs are built on nationally recognized models of success. Finally, the club is affordable to all children through exceptionally low dues, scholarships and work study programs.

The skills these future leaders are being taught will be used to lead organizations in the community such as the chamber. This includes programs like Keystone, which teaches leadership development in small groups. The teens plan and implement a community service project together taking responsibility for its success.

Another program which teaches academic skills and provides homework help is Power Hour. It is nationally recognized for its success. A third program is Goals for Graduation. By learning to set and achieve academic goals, kids at the Club receive skills that are fundamental to success in school, business and life.

I believe supporting tomorrow's leaders through the work of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is one of our most important functions as business leaders today. With the pressing need for another Club in the South Carlsbad area, I encourage you to join your fellow chamber members in generously supporting the construction of the new Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad today. To learn more about how you can help, call the Club at (760) 729-0207 and ask for Ron Sipiora or email [email protected]. Thank you.
