TheCarlsbad Chamber of Commerce presented its annual installation and awards dinner on Friday March 10 at 6 p.m. at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Aviara located at 7100 Four Seasons Point in Carlsbad.
The evening began with a cocktail hour and piano accompaniment courtesy of Kamau Kenyatta. Neo-soul band, King Kelly, serenaded guests throughout the evening with classic renditions of jazz favorites.
More than 600 local businesses, civic leaders and the who's who of North County, namely Carlsbad, attended the Chamber event, where awards were presented for the following categories:
Business of the Year (Small), John Stevenson Plumbing, Heating, & Air Conditioning; Business of the Year (Small), Sylvan Learning Center of Encinitas; Business of the Year (Medium), Museum of Making Music; Business of the Year (Large), Invitrogen Corporation; Businessperson of Year, Michael “Mick” Pattinson, Barratt American; Entrepreneur of the Year, Troy Mills & Tim Wrisley, Carlsbad Magazine; Entrepreneur of the Year, David and Susan Danglard, K1 Speed, Lifetime Achievement in Business, Richard Heckmann; Lifetime Achievement in Business, Judi Missett; Community Leadership, Julie Baker, Baker Land Surveys Inc.; Community Leadership, Gary Hill, GIA.
Greg Nelson, previous owner of Don Joy Orthopedics and President of the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad, received the Chairman's Award for his many philanthropic activities, community service and charitable giving.
At the awards dinner the Chamber also thanked the previous year's outgoing Board of Directors members, welcomed the incoming 2006 board of directors and honored the ongoing Chairman of the Board, Tim Stripe.
A live auction was held with prizes such as an oil painting, mountain bikes, resort vacations and an adorable puppy complete with a $500 Petco gift certificate. And a card for $100 in pet care services courtesy of Animal House Pet Care's Susan McBride. Several other donors helped contribute to the success of the live auction and the Awards Dinner itself.
Last year an estimated 580 local business and civic leaders were in attendance. In addition, the event featured a tribute to wounded Marines, all Purple Heart recipients, recently returned from deployment in Iraq.
