La Jolla Music Society has expanded its activities into the local area through the efforts of the La Jolla Music Society North County Committee, a group of business professionals and music enthusiasts intent on bringing the comprehensive, world-class music experiences and educational components to local residents and schools. The Committee's goal is to introduce a community music school, similar to the La Jolla Music Society program in San Diego, whereby underprivileged students receive free music instruction and are gifted their musical instruments after completing a two-year program.

In conjunction with this goal, the La Jolla Music Society North County Committee is presenting its "Tropical Nights" benefit event in Carlsbad on May 20, to support future educational and performance activities in the area. The event caps the second season of concerts in the Schulman Auditorium and visits to local schools by young, world-class artists.

"Providing opportunities for young musicians to follow their dreams is the foundation of this event and of this unique concert series," states Dawn Cauthen, attorney with Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch, LLP, the title sponsor for the event. "It is our mission to support these budding artists and to provide North County residents with an ongoing concert series like no other."

During the day, prior to each evening's concert, the featured artist visits a local school to perform and meet with student musicians. Over the past two years, these interactive sessions, designed to be informative and entertaining, have been held at Aviara Oaks and Valley Middle Schools; Carlsbad and La Costa Canyon High Schools and the Army and Navy Academy.

"Students receive educational materials and discuss the composers and the music being performed and they are encouraged to attend the concerts at the special student rate of $5," notes Gina McBride of McBride Financial Advisory, a founding Committee member. "The music students and their teachers have been very appreciative and inspired by visits from such well-known artists, who enjoy sharing their talents with other young people."

Christopher Beach, who recently came from New York to become the new President and Artistic Director of La Jolla Music Society is excited about the opportunity to grow and build on the organization's strengths. Mr. Beach was recognized by the Carlsbad City Council when it issued a proclamation launching the Carlsbad Winter Music Festival in January, during which La Jolla Music Society North County Series presented pianist Alpin Hong.

The La Jolla Music Society North County Series, in partnership with Carlsbad City Library, is presented in memory of Pat Stein, a well-known local journalist who was dedicated to the community and the arts. The inaugural season was generously underwritten by Richard Anderson of Ranch and Sea Realty, and the second season by Claude and Ruth Fenner, all friends of the late Ms. Stein.

The "Tropical Nights" benefit will be held on Saturday, May 20, from 7pm until 11pm, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 6450 Carlsbad Blvd. in Carlsbad. Guests will enjoy a delightful buffet served in the garden and Monte Carlo-style gaming in the casino, with a grand raffle prize. Tickets are $60 each, or $100 per pair.
