The Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) will hold their International Gemological Symposium in San Diego on August 27?29.

The International Gemological Symposium (IGS) is a prestigious forum that attracts professionals from every sector of the gem and jewelry trade. For three days, leading researchers and industry experts converge in to address key economic, technological and geopolitical factors of the industry in the 21st century. Consumer behavior pioneer, Paco Underhill will be a guest speaker for the 2006 symposium.

Underhill is the best-selling author of Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping. His presentation on "The Consumer of the 21stCentury" will address a multitude of factors that affect today's consumer behavior. The talk is scheduled for August 28 at 7:30 a.m. and is open to symposium participants only.

"Paco has made a science out of shopping behavior, and his presentation will provide attendees with great insight into why people buy in today's competitive marketplace," said GIA Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations Kathryn Kimmel, who is also the event’s co-chair.

Since the last symposium, held in 1999, the landscape of the jewelry industry has changed dramatically. There has been radical new supply and distribution channels, new consumer purchasing trends, the fallout from beryllium-diffused sapphires and the advent of gem-quality CVD synthetic diamonds.

The theme of this year's symposium, "Navigating the Challenges Ahead," speaks to the very fact that the gem and jewelry industry is entering uncharted territory. The International Gemological Symposium will address the sweeping changes that have occurred at every level within the industry.

During this important event, scientists, educators, and business leaders will offer their findings and insights on a vast array of topics, including:
Latest gem treatments
New gem occurrences
Synthetic and imitation gems
Marketing and economics in the jewelry industry
Diamond and colored stone manufacturing and distribution
Challenges for the retailer
Contemporary jewelry design
Antique and estate jewelry
Pearls
What makes this occasion even more significant is the 4th International Gemological Symposium and the GIA Gemological Research Conference will be held in conjunction with GIA's 75th anniversary.
