The Del Mar Fairgrounds has been enjoying the business of fun this summer. The San Diego County Fair closed its doors for the 2006 season with 1,205,719 visitors that enjoyed the "Ride the Tide to Fun" themed attractions, shows, exhibits, food and rides.
"This was one of the best fairs in our history. It was fun, safe, entertaining and educational,” said Timothy J. Fennell, CEO and General Manager of the San Diego County Fair and the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
The San Diego County Fair is the sixth largest fair in the nation and is the largest annual event in San Diego County. Food and Beverage sales reached a new high of $8,691,430 and increase of nearly 1 percent over last year's record.
However, fun wasn't the only plus factor to the Fairground's success.
"This was one of the best Fairs in our history. It was fun, safe, entertaining and educational,” said Patrick Kerins, Chief of Security for the 22nd District Agricultural Association. "The Sheriff’s Department classified this fair as a very safe and uneventful in terms of criminal activity."
This summer also marks Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's 67th racing season, where racing fans are promised an even bigger and better 43-day event.
For seven weeks each summer Del Mar serves up its famous mix of world-class horseracing, trendy trackside entertainment and sun-splashed special events that attract headline-making celebrities and regular fun-seekers alike. This year is no exception, and an amazing array of festivals, concerts and infield happenings will make every day at the Del Mar races an unforgettable event. Del Mar hopes to register another record-breaking season, attracting close to a million partygoers and horseracing enthusiasts.
The season kicked off on July 19 with Opening Day, where more than 40,000 race
fans flocked to the track. Del Mar runs its richest race, the $1 Million Pacific Classic, on Sunday, August 20. This signature event, renowned for drawing a field of the nation's
top Thoroughbreds and one of the season's largest crowds, is broadcast live
on ESPN2.
Racing is held daily, except Tuesdays, with post time for the first race on
most days at 2 p.m. For more information on race times, admission, parking
