Imagine, for a moment, that you and your favorite traveling companion have finally hit the road to take that long awaited trip to Napa Valley. As you drive, the excitement kicks into high gear with the sighting of the first Napa Valley Wine Festival banner tied to a lamppost, waving slightly in the breeze.

As you continue the journey, you survey the surrounding landscape attractively speckled with colorful flags, welcome signs and, yes, more banners.

Banners have the ability to convey both enthusiasm and anticipation of something that is special to a community. Perhaps the finest example of where a community has found wonderful success is Flagstaff, Arizona. Many of their local attractions take advantage of opportunities within that city's sign code to make a visible public announcement of an upcoming special event.

For some, the idea of revisiting the current sign code, especially as it pertains to street banners, might rank up there with having to deal with the Coastal Commission. However, Carlsbad has some truly wonderful special events throughout the year that could be appropriately celebrated through banner use.

Our neighbors in Encinitas and Oceanside have, for years, decorated Coast Highway with artistic banners that are talked about long after they're pulled down. And, because of the artistic element and importance of the event, some of these banners have even been auctioned or sold direct to the public. Talk about a win-win for everyone.

Patriotic holidays, like the fourth of July, might have lampposts in The Village decked out in the likeness of the American flag. When there are no events being sponsored, the City could incorporate the use of our beach iconic logo to replace the stock banners on the lampposts.

It's high time we celebrate, and do so in a big way. There is no better vehicle to accomplish this than by having an effective banner program that celebrates the absolute and total fun of Carlsbad.
