Live polka music, an authentic German dinner, a pumpkin decorating contest, and, of course, beer, are just a few of the festivities on the lineup for the 25th annual Carlsbad Rotary clubs' Oktoberfest.
The fun-filled family event will take place from 1 to 10 p.m. Oct. 6 at Holiday Park, located at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Pio Pico in Carlsbad. The traditional German festival will feature entertainment for children and adults.
There will be an inflatable obstacle course, clowns offering face painting and balloon animals, a magician, a performance by a young gymnastics group and an antique fire engine will be on display. Attendees can dance to the music of Roger and the Villagers, the MiraCosta Windjammers and the Pacific Coast Community Band.
The activities and refreshments will range from one to four tickets; one ticket equals $1. A German dinner that includes two sausages, potatoes, cabbage and a roll will be served for $10 from 1 to 8 p.m. Pumpkins will be for sale for $3 to $5 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Youth ages 5 to 15 who want to enter the contest for Best Decorated pumpkin will have until 4 p.m. to complete their masterpieces. The entry fee is $1. Winners of the four age groups will be chosen by a panel of judges.
David Kulchin, one of the organizers of the event, said thousands of people usually attend. He said it provides a great opportunity to “come and meet your neighbors.”
“It's a nice time for kids and families to get together and eat and dance and have a lot of fun,” Kulchin said.
The event is sponsored by the Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary clubs. Kulchin said all of the proceeds from Oktoberfest are donated to local nonprofit organizations, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad and the Women's Resource Center.
“We have raised well over $50,000 for the past few years,” he said. “We're very proud of the event.”
