There's a new organization, called the Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership, forming with the goal of implementing revitalization plans for Carlsbad's downtown area, known as the Village.
Throughout the summer, a working group consisting of retail merchants, property owners, residents and representatives from the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, city of Carlsbad, Carlsbad Village Business Association, Carlsbad Convention & Visitors Bureau and North County Transit District worked diligently to produce a working plan similar to a MainStreet USA organization. The efforts were guided by Kennedy Smith, a consultant hired by the city with years of experience managing the MainStreet program.
The Carlsbad VIP working group developed a set of bylaws to form the new organization based on successful models used in other cities. A public notice was issued asking for nominations to the board of directors and a slate was selected by the Nominating Committee. Once the board of directors is in place this month, it will start with the task of hiring an executive director to oversee the revitalization efforts.
In order for this effort to be successful, the community is invited to participate on committees to address the following:
• Promotions: Carlsbad VIP will promote and sponsor discussion groups to disseminate information and gather support for the revitalization efforts. The committee also will implement a plan for cultural, employment and commercial revitalization in the Village and develop and disperse community information.
• Economic Restructuring: Carlsbad VIP will help to diversify the community by recruiting new businesses to balance the economic mix and developing promotional marketing packages to attract targeted and unique businesses to the Village. It also will assist potential business owners in finding space and financing.
• Design: Carlsbad VIP will assist in planning and coordinating the design of improvements in the Village. The committee also will promote and assist with beautification projects and effective redevelopment efforts.
