An innovative partnership between local businesses and the city of Carlsbad is one of the many ways volunteers are improving the quality of life in the coastal community.
Through the partnership, business owners have a unique opportunity to do team-building with their employees while helping the city's on-going efforts to eradicate the “patchwork” look of graffiti cover-up efforts.
Corporate and small business volunteers can paint specified walls one of three color options. If those walls are later “tagged,” city staff can paint over the graffiti with the same color, eliminating the unsightly look of inconsistent graffiti cover-ups.
“Corporations are looking for team-building experiences and the city is looking for assistance,” said Sue Irey, the city's community volunteer coordinator. “Often, employees appreciate the chance to serve the community where they work, especially if it involves getting out of the office for a few hours.”
Recently, John Laing Homes partnered with
the city.
More than 20 of the company's employees, who are interested in corporate team-building and beautifying their community, painted several city walls along Carlsbad Village Drive, between El Camino Real and Highland Avenue. They painted more than 16,000 square feet of wall space with 95 gallons of paint.
“We recognize it takes many helping hands to maintain a beautiful city like Carlsbad,” said John Laing Homes Division President Dave Prolo. “As a homebuilder and member of the business community, we are committed to doing our part.”
The city is looking for more companies to partake in its efforts to beautify Carlsbad by streamlining the graffiti clean-up process.
