Carlsbad Unified's energy program saves $178,000
The Carlsbad Unified School District's ambitious energy conservation program has saved $178,000 in the first six months since its inception.
The six months of savings equates to 565,266 kilowatts of electricity, 4,467 therms of natural gas and 8,948,324 gallons of water. These savings prevent 209 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to annually taking 38 vehicles off of the highway.
The district partnered with Energy Education to develop this customized, sustainable energy conservation program that reduces consumption of electricity, natural gas, fuel oil and water through effecting changes in organizational and human behavior. Energy Education's conservation experts work closely with district personnel to audit buildings and train staff to control energy use wherever possible.

Coldwell Banker leads in industrial sales
Nearly 70 percent of all North County owner-user industrial property sales this year were handled by Carlsbad-based Coldwell Banker Commercial, according to Alan Scott, president and CEO of the firm.
A total of 23 owner-user industrial property sales were recorded in North County through Nov. 1, 2009, according to statistics compiled by CoStar. Of the 23 sales, Coldwell Banker Commercial was involved in all but seven. In addition, the firm was the listing broker in more than half of the total transactions. Tri-City offers disaster preparedness series
A series of business-focused, hands-on disaster preparedness workshops will take place at Tri-City Medical Center over the next three months.
The Business Emergency Response Initiative Workshops 2010 series is free. It will kick-off Jan. 15 with the Understanding and Developing a Hazard Vulnerability Assessment Workshop.
The second part of the series, Understanding and Developing a Business Emergency Operations Plan, will take place Feb. 19.
The third session, Understanding and Developing a Business Continuity Plan, will be on March 19.
All of the workshops are from 8 to 11 a.m. While offered as a series, participants can attend single sessions.

TaylorMade adidas Golf employees take global voyage
In mid-November, TaylorMade adidas Golf launched a global initiative called Wear in the World, sending two of its employees on a 30-day globetrotting adventure to test its apparel and outerwear in the world's harshest conditions.
The two golfers chosen to embark on the journey were Josh Sullivan, who works in the business development department in Carlsbad, and Lindsay Knowlton, who works with the product marketing team in Canada. They were selected from numerous video submissions from around the world, and after rounds of unique interview sessions.
The two winners left from Carlsbad in a helicopter to travel to Bolivia, Argentina, South Africa and Australia. They put the company's apparel and footwear to the test by playing the most geographically extreme, climatically challenging and dangerous golf courses in the world.
Their adventure concluded at the world's hottest golf course, temperatures were above 120 degrees, Dec. 14 in Alice Springs, Australia.

Tri-City Medical Center recently stepped up its wellness campaign on behalf of the region's residents by becoming the title sponsor of the Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon.
The event is now called the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon.
"We are striving to spread the word to residents that wellness is as important as treatment," said Jeff Segal, vice president of marketing for the hospital. "Prevention is the way to a longer quality of life."
On Jan. 24, thousands of runners from all over the world will converge on Carlsbad to participate in one of the premier running events in California. This event is one of the qualifying races for runners to pre-qualify for the world-famous Boston Marathon.
With LEGOLAND and three world-class resorts, the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, La Costa Resort and Spa and the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, runners are beginning to call Carlsbad their favorite training site. The lure of great weather is one reason the triathlon was invented here in San Diego County. Many of the world's finest runners live in the region to train.

Jazzercise celebrates 40 years
Jazzercise celebrated its 40th anniversary in November with an event in Chicago that featured more than 1,000 fitness enthusiasts from 38 states and five countries.
Jazzercise founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett pioneered the dance fitness concept with a single class in the Chicago suburb of Evanston in 1969. Today, Jazzercise, with international headquarters based in Carlsbad, has more than 7,500 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in all 50 states and 32 countries.

Cal State receives record number of fall applications
At the close of the priority application period on Nov. 30, California State University San Marcos had received 17,300 applications for fall 2010, setting a campus record and a 22 percent increase over fall 2009.
First-time freshmen applications increased 7 percent and transfer applications increased 48 percent compared to fall 2009. To comply with the CSU system-wide directive to reduce enrollment due to state budget cuts, CSUSM must decrease its enrollment by 6 percent for this academic year.

The North County Transit District has received a $2 million discretionary grant to make alternative energy technology investments that will assist in the reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The district was awarded the funding from the Federal Transit Administration in support of its sustainability plan. The district proposes to use the grant to install solar power generation capability across a variety of locations throughout its service area.
Selection for the funding was a highly competitive process with $100 million available for green transit initiatives across the entire United States.
The district is one of 43 entities that received the funding, and one of only four winning projects in California.

Time Warner launches $100 million education program
In an effort to address American school children's decline in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), Time Warner Cable San Diego recently launched a five-year, $100 million dollar, country-wide education initiative.
Under Connect a Million Minds, Time Warner will donate $100 million in cash and in-kind resources over the next five years to local schools and STEM education programs across the nation. Elements of this initiative will include a national advisory board of experts from several related fields, best-in-class national partners, employee participation and programs that use Time Warner's video, data and voice platforms to engage youth in grades K-12 in science and technology activities.

The new tenants include Tommy V's Urban Kitchen & Bar, Froots Smoothies & Wraps and Postal Annex. The combined leases total $2.4 million and approximately 6,700 square feet.
