For some Carlsbad teachers, classroom learning is not enough. For these exceptional educators, there is no project too daunting and no obstacle too difficult when it comes to helping their students learn.

At Kelly Elementary, a group of such extraordinary teachers created a program that gives students the opportunity to learn outside the classroom. The program, Trails to Discovery: Outdoor Classroom Experiences, uses the natural beauty of Carlsbad as a learning tool for third graders. Instead of teaching about the geographical and cultural resources that surround Carlsbad from a textbook, the educators at Kelly decided to take their lesson outdoors. Teaming with the Agua Hedionda Discovery Center, which opened in 2006, Kelly's third grade teachers developed Trails to Discovery. The program was intended to promote learning while creating a valuable community relationship. Students participate in field trips that teach about thoughtful stewardship of the planet and coexistence with native plants and animals. These activities help instill an appreciation of the area and its life.

This program was nominated for Best Adapted/Adopted program at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's annual Outstanding Educational Program Awards Dinner, which will be at 6 p.m. April 27 at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

“We really strive to honor exceptional academic programs; those in which educators have gone above and beyond the standard teaching program to offer a unique educational opportunity to their students,” said Lisa Manemann, director of special events for the chamber.

In addition to Kelly Elementary, many other schools were nominated for awards in categories that include Best Adopted or Adapted Program, Best Entrepreneurial Program, Best Innovative Program and Best Science Program.

For this year's event, the chamber is asking businesses to join in the celebration by Toasting a Teacher at this year's awards dinner. Businesses may Toast a Teacher by purchasing tickets that sponsor a teacher's seat at the event, or by purchasing a table, which can seat 10.

“It is so important for the business community to come out and support these educators and their programs,” Manemann said. “Everyone is invited to attend this special event.”
Toast a Teacher Silver Star table sponsorships are available for $975, and include a coportate table of ten, two of which seats will sponsor award finalists; and Toast a Teacher Gold Star table sponsorships are available for $1500, benefits of sponsorship include one corporate table of 10, and one sponsored school table of 10 for school district employees, with company signage and preferred seating.
