Founded in 1990, the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation helps conserve, restore and enhance the environmental features of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, marsh, wetlands and watershed area. It endeavors to protect sensitive land through acquisition or other means and to promote balanced recreational and commercial uses consistent with assured future lagoon vitality.

Significant milestone: First organization in the world to successfully eradicate the invasive species Caulerpa Taxifolia from a body of water. This invasive seaweed is destroying parts of the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea and other waters off the coast of Australia.

Annual events: This past March we held our first annual World Water Day Festival which was attended by over 600 people. The event featured numerous educational displays and activities for all ages focusing on the theme of water awareness and conservation. We will be hosting a Lagoon Festival on July 14 and next spring we are planning a Migratory Bird Festival. Every October we host a Halloween event at the Center with a live bat educational show as well as costumes and trick-or-treating.

Corporate Supporters: NRG Energy; Poseidon Resources; DesignGroupWest; Hofman Planning and Engineering; ViaSat; Invitrogen; Carlsbad Country Day School.

How you measure success: Inspiring local citizens, one person at a time, to become stewards for the beautiful natural resources of Carlsbad.

Best Recent Moment: Our third grade school program recently won the prize for Outstanding Educational Program from the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. This program offers a comprehensive environmental steward-based curriculum wherein the students visit the Discovery Center four times over the course of the school year. The themes for the four visits include native plants and their ethnobotanical uses, lagoon history and archaeology, Luiseno history and culture, watersheds, wetlands and wildlife, endangered amphibians and migratory birds.

How can people get involved? You can get involved by becoming a member of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation and supporting us with your annual membership donations or by volunteering to help out at the Discovery Center or with our programs. We also need financial contributions to support our on-going operational expenses and school programs.
