Good news came from Supervisor Bill Horn's office when it announced that the Carlsbad Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) would receive a $2,000 grant from the County of San Diego to be used for a hospitality scholarship, to be awarded by the CVB.

Although details will follow in the coming months, an application process will allow for Carlsbad residents who are registered in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at San Diego State University to apply for this first-time scholarship.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the county working in partnership with us,” said Nancy Nayudu, CVB board chairwoman. “Providing scholarship assistance is a wonderful way to give back to an industry that is a major economic driver for both our local economy and for the San Diego region.”

A canvass of representatives from the Carlsbad hospitality industry will soon get underway with an eye toward setting up a review panel that will ultimately make its recommendation from a list of candidates. The bureau hopes to have a member
of Horn's staff be a part of the selection process.

“As far as we know, the idea of providing scholarship funding by a destination marketing organization is a first for this area,” said Nayudu. “We hope that the lucky Carlsbad recipient will choose to put his or her academic training to work right here in their hometown after they graduate.”

The CVB thanked the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and Horn for their support.
