When the first weekend in November approaches it always means the same thing, thousands of people will happily flock to downtown Carlsbad to partake in the largest one-day street fair in the nation.
The Carlsbad Village Street Faire will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4. It takes place each year in May and November.
Now in its 33rd year, the free event has grown to be very popular.
More than 100,000 people have attended the faire for the past six years, said Ted Owen, president and chief executive officer of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the faire. The lively event previously boasted an attendance of 90,000.
“People come to the event from all over the place because they know they can come back every fall and spring and find high-quality items to purchase,” Owen said. “Attendees can enjoy the beauty of the seaside city while perusing unique booths, indulging in delicious eats and enjoying family entertainment.”
About 900 vendors will be selling everything imaginable, including jewelry, household products, art, antiques and holiday items. There will be an international food court with more than 50 booths featuring everything from barbeque to traditional Greek fare.
An exciting area for children will include rides, games, a super slide, a bounce house, a rock climbing wall, face painting and arts and crafts.
The Rotary Club of Carlsbad's beer and wine garden will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and promises to entertain with the Chargers game on a large screen TV and live bands.
Ed Scarpelli, secretary of the Rotary Club, said the proceeds will benefit the club's many charitable projects, which include providing scholarships to high school students and caring for Carlsbad's parks.
The Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad will host a pancake breakfast at the Carlsbad railroad depot from 7 a.m. to noon. The $5 meal will include pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice.
Kiwanis Club member Liz Ferguson said all of the proceeds will benefit the club, which uses the money to serve the area's children.
To make parking more convenient, complimentary shuttles will run to and from the faire every 15 minutes. The shuttles will pick up and drop off passengers at the northwest corner of Sears at Westfield Plaza Camino Real, as well as the Poinsettia train station.
Grand Avenue from Carlsbad Boulevard to Jefferson Street, and all of the cross streets in between, will be closed for the event, said Brian Roth, general manager of Kennedy and Associates, the company hired by the chamber each year to manage the faire. He said the streets will close at 4 a.m. Sunday and should reopen by 6:30 p.m.
