Toys for Tots seeks donations
Carlsbad Self Storage, part of the San Diego Self Storage family, has teamed up with the U.S. Marine Corps for its annual Toys for Tots toy drive.
All 18 San Diego Self Storage facilities have been designated as official drop-off points for the toy drive. The Carlsbad facility is located at 2235 Palomar Airport Road.

Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted through Dec. 19. Also needed are gifts, such as sports equipment and apparel, for older children through age 18.

Study Depot offers new communication system to connect parents to tutors
In September, Study Depot started its eighth year successfully tutoring Carlsbad and Encinitas students.
The company, located at 7750 El Camino Real, Suite H in Carlsbad, now offers parents a state-of-the-art online communication system that allows tutors to e-mail session notes shortly following a tutoring session. Instructors provide a summary of each session and parents are invited to respond with questions, comments or concerns.

Army & Navy Academy receives donation
The Army & Navy Academy in Carlsbad recently announced that it will receive a $140,000 contribution in products and services from Winning Technologies.
The donation is for $70,000 per year over a two-year period. The school is the only military boarding facility in California. It provides an environment that teaches self-discipline, teamwork and leadership for young men in grades seven through 12.
BIO selects Gable PR agency
The Biotechnology Industry Organization, or BIO, has selected Gable PR and the agency team of Hill & Knowlton to manage the public and media relations programs for its 2008 BIO International Convention in San Diego.

Hewitt named marketing director of the year
Lenette Hewitt, vice president of sales and marketing for Barratt American's Urban Division, has been named the recipient of the Brian Angelini Memorial Marketing Director of the Year Award by the Sales and Marketing Council of the Building Industry Association.
The award recognizes marketing professionals who have made significant contributions to their company and industry. Under Hewitt's direction, Barratt's urban neighborhoods swept this year's SAM Awards, taking home a total of eight accolades.
Dog pageant draws large crowd to park opening
undreds of dog enthusiasts were in attendance for the first-ever Pageant of Pooches, a celebration of man's best friend held in early October to commemorate the opening of The Gathering Place.
The five-acre open space park is within The Estates at StoneBridge. The Corky McMillin Companies is master developer of The Estates at StoneBridge.
Conveniently located off StoneBridge Parkway, The Gathering Place is a tree-lined grassy knoll featuring a spacious lawn area perfect for outdoor events. Foundation celebrates 5th anniversary
The Cardiovascular Disease Foundation celebrated its 5th Anniversary in October.
The foundation is a nonprofit public charity based in Carlsbad. Its goal is to teach everyone throughout San Diego County how to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

GIA launches diamond awareness campaign
The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, a nonprofit gemological research and academic institution – has launched its first-ever national public awareness campaign to help better educate people about diamonds.
The campaign explains the Four Cs of diamond elements (Color, Clarity, Carat Weight and Cut) and the importance of having a diamond grading report. “The Difference Between Wondering and Knowing” campaign has three parts: national print and online advertising, a kit for retailers to help them educate customers and a new GIA Web site, www.gia4cs.gia.edu.
Keebler Kids wins award
The Keebler Kids Marathon Mile, a children's fun run/walk held at LEGOLAND California, was awarded the Bronze medal at the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports 2007 Spotlight Awards.
The marathon is organized by Carlsbad-based In Motion Inc., a full-service management firm. The Keebler Kids Marathon Mile was recognized for its positive impact on fitness levels and the well being of California children and youth.

ViaSat receives Air Force contract
ViaSat Inc., a Carlsbad-based company that produces satellite and other wireless communication products, received an $8.7 million Air Force contract.
The contract is for work for system design and development of the next generation telemetry, tracking and control cryptographic unit. The system is designed to replace legacy equipment used in satellite ground stations. The work is expected to be complete by mid-2012.
