Communications is one of the top priorities of the Carlsbad City Council, and providing topical information on key city issues has been a major focus this year.
To keep our residents and businesses up to date on projects and priorities, we have developed an informational Web site that showcases top city issues and provides information in an easy to use format. The Web site, www.carlsbadconnected.com, links residents to city issues such as the proposed Wal-Mart store, Carlsbad Village revitalization, Ponto Beach Village Vision Plan, Cannon Road agricultural lands and open space plans.
Visitors to the Web site's home page are greeted with colorful photos and short informational captions for each of the community issues. From there, visitors can click on an issue of their choice to get more information. City staff regularly updates the Web site to ensure residents receive the most up-to-date information.
The Web page for each issue features a user-friendly and visually appealing format, making it easy to search for information. Each community issue contains its own overview page, a question and answer section, photographs or maps and a “What's New” section.
In addition, the Web site features short video montages about issues. Val Brown, the city's award-winning video producer, has produced two videos so far on the issues. One provides information about the proposed vision plan for Ponto. The other provides interesting, factual information on Proposition D and the city's corresponding community visioning project.
The site also will serve as a two-way communications tool. A “Questions and Comments” section will help the city clarify people's concerns. Items submitted on the page are frequently reviewed by staff.
Meetings on demand
Interested in learning more about your city? Then log on to the city's Web site
where you can watch a City Council or Planning Commission meeting, or even a city program, on demand. To view a streaming video, go online to www.carlsbadca.gov and click on the “WebCast Council and Planning Commission” link on the top left side of the home page.
Carlsbad residents were quick to welcome the city's new online streaming video feature and e-newsletter. City Council meetings, Planning Commission meetings and Community Update videos each average 1,000 Web views every month, and more than 1,500 people subscribe to the city's e-newsletter. Sent via e-mail once a month, Carlsbad e-news is a quick, easy way for residents to learn about hot topics, city programs and events.
Residents also can also sign up for a variety of other city news subscriptions, which include items of interest like arts, development, special events, employment, recreation and planning news.
To join the city's subscription service, go online to www.carlsbadca.gov and click on the “Subscription Service” link toward the bottom left side of the home page.
