Carlsbad Gourmet, a company that manufactures products using local ingredients, was selected as a winner in one of the world's most distinguished gourmet food competitions.
The 2008 Scovie Awards employed the industry's most rigorous blind taste tests while using a panel of the country's top culinary experts who sampled hundreds of the world's most lauded gourmet foods. Thetop scoring products each won a coveted Scovie banner.
More than 780 products from around the world competed for top honors. Carlsbad Gourmet's Stone Ruination IPA Curry Mustard Grilling Sauce, made with local favorite Stone Brewing Co. Ruination IPA, placed third in its division.
The sauce's ingredients include whole mustard seed, curry, fresh garlic, fresh onions, honey, tumeric, cinnamon and black pepper, among other things. Most importantly, there are no preservatives.
“We add Stone Ruination IPA in the grilling sauce and then we cook out the alcohol, leaving the flavor of the local craft ale behind,” said Russ Bruhn, owner of Carlsbad Gourmet.
The award-winning sauce was created by Bruhn on the Fourth of July last year. It was introduced for retail sale in September.
The sauce is available at the Stone Brewing Co. retail store and select stores throughout San Diego County, including the Armstrong Garden Center in Carlsbad. It also is available online at www.carlsbadgourmet.com.
The Scovie Awards are named for Wilbur Scoville, who pioneered a rating scale for spicy foods. The awards have become the industry standard for excellence in more than 60 categories of fiery foods.
