The Carlsbad 5000, which is known as the world's fastest 5K, brings thousands of runners to downtown Carlsbad to enjoy the scenic 3.1-mile course, and in many cases, to set world records.
Two Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce employees joined the more than 14,000 runners, walkers and junior racers who participated in events over the race weekend, which took place April 5?6. The event also featured a free health and fitness expo for attendees to enjoy.
Lynn Delanzo, the chamber's information specialist, ran in the Master's Women 40 & Over heat. Delanzo began running in the Carlsbad 5000 11 years ago with the personal goal of just finishing the 5K.
After winning her first medal for being one of the first 250 women to cross the finish line, Delanzo became more competitive and always tried to beat her time from the previous year, which she did up until this year. But she still finished this year's race with a great time of 49:26:14, which was 262nd place out of 1,140 women.
“This year, my goal was a little different. It was to win a medal for my mother, my best friend, who is under hospice care,” Delanzo said. “Whenever I felt like quitting, and I sometimes did, she popped into my head to keep me running.”
Delanzo added that the Carlsbad 5000 is a great, fun family event that she would recommend to everyone who enjoys the sport of running. The Junior Carlsbad, which took place in the Village, included 11 races for every age and fitness level.
Sarah Castiglione, executive assistant at the chamber, entered her 3-year-old daughter, Madisyn, in the event for the second year in a row.
“Madisyn had so much fun last year with her family and friends cheering her on from the sidelines that she asked to participate again this year,” Sarah said.
Madisyn ran the Toddler Trot with her best friend, 3-year-old Kennedy Magnusson. The girls beat out more than a dozen other competitors to win their heat.
“After practicing for two weeks leading up to the event, the girls were so excited when they won,” Sarah said. “I was really excited too. My sister videotaped the whole experience and afterward we watched it over and over again at breakfast. I was so proud.”
