California Manufacturing Technology Consulting, or CMTC, is a nonprofit organization that receives federal funding through the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
CMTC is an active member of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and other local business organizations. The mission of CMTC is to work with small and midsize manufacturing companies throughout Southern California to help them thrive and grow.
Four years ago, CMTC created the Small Manufacturers Advantage, or SMA, program to assist small manufacturers who can't afford consulting services and who would benefit from utilizing manufacturing experts as a resource for their business.
The SMA program provides expertise and leadership for small manufacturers, helping to identify issues and offer solutions. This program is federally funded and there is no fee to participate. The program offers assistance with strategic planning, quality compliance, sales, marketing and process improvement through implementing lean manufacturing techniques.
The SMA team recognizes that each company is unique and will carefully assess the needs of the manufacturing business with an objective lens. They also provide a written improvement plan with recommendations to help the business thrive and grow. This is followed by hands-on assistance and continuing contact with the SMA consultant as a business resource and advisor.
Meet two companies currently benefiting from the program by working with SMA Consultant David Moates:
• One is an Oceanside-based business that provides contract cutting and sewing, material sourcing and custom graphics, embroidery and silk screening. All of the products are domestic made. The apparel company recently worked with SMA to expand and sharpen its marketing strategies.
“I am very pleased with the help we've received,” said Scott Wilson, president of the apparel company. “The SMA program is vital to small businesses and their support helped me get going in the right direction.”
• The other is a metal arts business based in San Marcos. The company designs and manufactures high-quality hardware and decorative tiles using many different materials. They joined the SMA program in 2007 and received coaching to assist with strategic business planning, as well as manufacturing processes information.
“I've been to many great seminars that excite and inspire, but then I go back to the office and get lost in the day-to-day activities. I don't execute. The SMA program has taken us past inspiration, and we are now implementing many of the recommendations,” said Valerie Saint-Gaudens, CEO of the metal arts company. “The support and guidance we have received from the SMA team has surpassed my expectations. I recommend this program to all manufacturers who want to reinvigorate and grow their business.”
If you are a Southern California manufacturer with $100,000 to $15 million in annual sales, you are eligible to participate in this no-cost program. For more information, call Joanne Abbott at (619) 846-6533 or e-mail her at [email protected].
