San Diego Hat Co. gave away 150 hats with a total retail value of $4,000 to beachgoers at Tamarack Beach June 20 as part of the National Hat Day in the Sun event.
“Many people asked why we would give away hats when we are in the business of selling hats,” said Teresa Gardner, vice president of marketing for the Carlsbad company. “The purpose was two-fold. We wanted to participate in the national event highlighting the benefit of wearing the right hat to protect against sun damage, skin cancer and premature aging. We also wanted to provide free hats to people who were not wearing one while in the sun, therefore exposing themselves to harmful rays.”
Ninety percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Gardner said the event took place on a very sunny day and the information they passed out, along with the free hats, helped the public understand how important wearing a hat is to maximize their time spent outside.
“It made us feel good to give back to the community that helped us grow our business,” she added.
The National Hat Day in the Sun event was organized by The Headwear Association to generate public awareness about the importance of wearing a hat to protect against the sun. During the event, complimentary hats were distributed throughout the United States in places like Florida, New York, Chicago, Texas and Nevada.
San Diego Hat Co. also participated in the national Hats for the Homeless event earlier this year. The company gave away 100 hats with a retail value of $2,500 at the Brother Benno Foundation Center in Oceanside.
“Our vision is a hat on every head and by explaining the benefits of wearing a hat, whether it is protection from the elements or a fashionable look, we are striving for San Diego Hat Co. to become your favorite hat,” Gardner said.
