The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce officially kicked off its Art in the Heart of the Village program July 29 when artist Phyllis Swanson transformed the first power box into a work of art.
Swanson painted the power box on Carlsbad Village Drive, between Carlsbad Boulevard and Washington Street. The box was adopted by The Lund Team, a family-owned real estate company in Carlsbad, and is painted with the family's four dogs.
The theme of this year's program is animals and the community is invited to participate in the Carlsbad Chamber's fire hydrant painting program. Under the approval of the city of Carlsbad, approximately 28 hydrants and four power boxes throughout the Village are expected to be painted.
The cost to adopt a hydrant or power box varies depending on its location. The price ranges from $300 to $750, which includes the adoption fee and paint. If needed, the chamber can recommend volunteer artists to paint the focal points.
Those interested must adopt and paint their hydrants and power boxes by the end of this month. Once all of the hydrants and power boxes are painted, a detailed map will be provided to the general public that notes the location of each, as well as the artist and sponsor.
It is the chamber's intent to bring locals and tourists alike to tour the downtown area to vote for their three favorite designs. Ballots will be available at select businesses in the Village. The winners will be announced at a special event.
After its initial positive impact two years ago, the chamber re-launched the program with a new theme to continue the beautification of the area and, most importantly, to promote tourism in the Village. The original program included 26 hydrants and no power boxes.
“As you drive around downtown, the painted fire hydrants represent the area's sense of community. Residents, businesses and visitors enjoy the creative designs and the great impact they have on the appearance of the Village,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the chamber. “This is a wonderful way to attract people to the charming downtown area.”
A portion of the funds raised through this program will benefit Military Outreach Ministry Camp Pendleton. The program sponsors are Carlsbad Animal Hospital and DeNault's True Value Hardware.
