The recent approval of the Carlsbad Desalination Project helps the city of Carlsbad meet its goal of securing a diverse and drought resistant water supply.
The goal is one of several initiatives that support an overall sustainability framework approved last year by the Carlsbad City Council. The city is committed to doing its part to care for the environment and offer its residents and businesses a way to practice environmental stewardship.
Last fall, the City Council adopted sustainability guiding principles to help Carlsbad realize its overarching goal of creating a healthy and vibrant city that will be sustainable for generations to come. Often referred to as the “three-legged stool,” Carlsbad's sustainability framework covers these interdependent areas:
• Social, represents those places where people live, work, play and come together.
• Economic, the creation of an economic system that provides the necessary fiscal resources for the community and the government to be financially healthy on an ongoing basis.
• Environmental, the care and stewardship of the environment and the interface between people and the natural and constructed open spaces that contribute to the overall health of the community.
An interdepartmental effort at the city, called the Carlsbad Environmental Resources Management Team, is managing the implementation of the sustainability policy. The team started by developing a blueprint for environmental sustainability.
The plan covers initiatives for water and energy conservation; clean air and water; securing a diverse and drought-resistant water supply; protection, preservation and restoration of the natural and human-made environment; waste reduction and recycling; efficient transportation and low emission fuel sources and sound procurement decisions.
Similar blueprints are being created to support social and economic sustainability.
“Achieving a sustainable community requires a long-term commitment,” said Carlsbad Mayor Bud Lewis. “It requires the involvement of all of our residents and businesses, moving forward together.”
