The California Hotel & Lodging Association recently recognized Carlsbad's West Inn & Suites with two of its 2008 prestigious Stars of the Industry Awards.
The hotel received awards for Lodging Property Achievement, Best Guest Relations, Small Property and Manager of the Year, Small Property: Carl Holmes.
Including the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau honoring Holmes as Manager of the Year in October, the association awards mark the fourth major industry accolade for West Inn & Suites this year. Waste Management beautifies California

In November, Waste Management and Sony Electronics Inc. collected more than 150,000 pounds of electronic materials for safe processing and recycling from more than 1,600 San Diego County residents.
The free electronics recycling event took place in honor of America Recycles Day. E-World Recyclers and the San Diego Community College District also participated. Waste Management also is taking care of the region through its recent donation of $10,000 to Keep California Beautiful, a nonprofit organization dedicated to resource conservation and waste minimization in California.

Tri-City receives stroke care award

Tri-City Medical Center, a Joint Commission Designated Primary Stroke Center, has received the American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines Stroke Bronze Performance Achievement Award.
Tri-City is the first hospital in North County to achieve this recognition. The award recognizes Tri-City's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

Invitrogen merges with Applied Biosystems

Invitrogen, a Carlsbad-based company that makes tools for drug discovery, has finalized its merger with Applied Biosystems.
The new company, Life Technologies, is based in Carlsbad and headed by Gregory Lucier, Invitrogen's CEO. The combined companies employ
9,500 people and have a presence in more than 100 countries.

Team Sheraton Carlsbad races for the cure

Team Sheraton Carlsbad raised more than $3,000 for the 12th Annual Susan G. Komen San Diego Race For the Cure.
The team was led by Rachel Blake, director of operations for the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, who is a seven year cancer survivor. Blake credits excellent care and a positive attitude as the secret to her cancer free status, and is determined to do her part to help other women in the same position win the fight.
More than 13,000 people participated in the race, which raised nearly $1.4 million to help fund education, screening and treatment programs for women in the San Diego area.

TaylorMade-adidas Golf acquires Ashworth

TaylorMade-adidas Golf has successfully completed its purchase of Ashworth Inc.
TaylorMade said 74 percent of Ashworth's stockholders tendered their shares in favor of the merger at a price of $1.90 per share in cash, or $26.5 million. TaylorMade also assumed $46 million in Ashworth debt.
As a result of the acquisition, Carlsbad-based Ashworth became a wholly-owned subsidiary of TaylorMade-adidas Golf, also based in Carlsbad. Any shares of Ashworth common stock not tendered were cancelled and converted into the right to receive the $1.90 in cash per share to be paid in the tender offer, without interest and less any required withholding taxes.
