Gordon Peterson has been selected as the new information technology director for the city of Carlsbad.
Peterson, who was previously acting as the interim information technology director, assumed his duties as director Dec. 24. He was selected after a rigorous nationwide recruitment, following the resignation of the previous director, Opinder Bawa, in April of 2007.
As director of information technology, Peterson's primary responsibilities include overseeing the city's comprehensive information technologies program. This includes directing the city's voice and data technologies, overseeing the city's increasing e-government services and implementing strategic technology plans.
He also will oversee the city's numerous information systems, including financial, document management, public works and library.
“Gordon has done a great job of keeping the city's information and technology efforts focused on the future, constantly improving our ability to deliver excellent service to the community and city staff,” said Deputy City Manager James Elliot. “Gordon and the IT staff have found ways to improve the city's technology infrastructure so we are well positioned to take advantage of efficiencies in the way to do business and improve the quality of our work.”
Peterson has worked for the city of Carlsbad for more than 22 years, most recently in the role of interim information technology director. Before that, Peterson served as the city's information technology manager.
Experienced in information technology, Peterson also worked as a senior programmer for Dalfi Inc. and SeaWorld. He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in organizational leadership from Chapman University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Coleman College, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology and sociology from San Diego State University.
“This is an exciting time to be in the technology field,” Peterson said. “I look forward to continuing to work with the city in this new role.”
