CHS orchestra performs at Carnegie Hall

An engaging, lively and entertaining evening celebrating a full array of musical styles, including modern Villa-Lobos, jazz, pop and the classics, will be showcased from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb.11 at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center, 3557 Lancer Way, Carlsbad.
The evening is a benefit concert for the Carlsbad High School Chamber Orchestra, which has been chosen to perform at Carnegie Hall in April. All proceeds will assist the orchestra in this once in a lifetime experience.

Legoland announces new GM, hotel plan

Legoland California Resort has announced a new general manager, as well as plans to build a three-story, Lego-themed hotel on its property.
Longtime President and General Manager John Jakobsen is now the managing director of Legoland Parks and will be based out of Merlin Entertainment's corporate headquarters in England. Peter Ronchetti, who has been the general manager of Thorpe Park, one of the largest parks within the Merlin Entertainments Group, for more than six years, is the new general manager of Legoland California Resort.
In a unanimous vote last month, the Carlsbad Planning Commission approved Legoland's request for permission to build a hotel on its property. The proposal must still be approved by the Carlsbad City Council and the California Coastal Commission. The up to 250-room hotel would be located to the right of Legoland's entrance in an area currently used for bus parking.
This would be the first Legoland-themed hotel in the United States and the second in the world. For more information, visit www.legoland.com.

Carlsbad Youth Baseball begins spring season

Carlsbad Youth Baseball, or CYB, will celebrate the beginning of its spring season with opening day festivities that begin at 9 a.m. March 7 at Pine Avenue Park.
CYB is a nonprofit organization that serves hundreds of players and their families in Carlsbad and surrounding cities. Its mission is to provide the opportunity for all children, regardless of skill, experience and financial status, to have a positive and fun experience learning the fundamentals of baseball, teamwork and sportsmanship.

CVB board appoints Laney as interim executive director

Frankie Laney has been appointed interim executive director of the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau by the organization's board of directors.
Laney is replacing Kurt Burkhart, who led the bureau for the last eight years. Laney, the bureau's public relations director, will manage all aspects of day-to-day operations for Carlsbad's only destination marketing organization while the board searches for a permanent replacement.

Cal State San Marcos offers green courses

Cal State San Marcos Extended Learning is offering a Green Business Operations Certificate Program and a one-day sustainability conference this spring.
The program will allow professionals the opportunity to evaluate the impact of green responsibility on their business and gather tools to successfully meet new legislative challenges. It is comprised of a total of six courses, including Greening Your Business Operations, Green Facilities, Green Purchasing, Green Best Practices, Green Return on Investment and Leading Green Change.
The March 13 conference, Sustainability: Adapting for the Future, will help attendees prepare for the future, comply with new legislation and learn about successful examples of sustainability in practice.

MiraCosta names new superintendent, president

The MiraCosta College board of trustees has named Francisco Rodriguez, current president of Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, as the college's next superintendent and president.
Rodriguez will assume the position March 1, taking over for Susan Cota, who has served in an interim position due to the departure of Victoria Munoz Richart in 2007. Rodriguez holds a doctorate of philosophy in education from Oregon State University, a master's degree in community development and a bachelor's degree in Chicano studies, both from the University of California, Davis.

Fuse Fitness improvements complete

Fuse Fitness, Carlsbad's newest state-of-the-art fitness facility located at 2502 El Camino Real, recently underwent a $950,000 customized tenant improvement project completed by Prevost Construction.
In just three months, Prevost Construction transformed the 16,144-square-foot space from a Good Guys retail store into the brand new fitness center. The retail store's interior was demolished and new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were design-built for Fuse Fitness.

West's make $3 million gift

Gary and Mary West, owners of Bistro West and West Steak and Seafood in Carlsbad, recently made a $3 million contribution through their foundation to Senior Community Centers.
The donation will help the nonprofit open the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center in downtown San Diego. The wellness center will house Senior Community Centers' existing programs and will allow the nonprofit to implement state-of-the-art programs and services designed to help today's active seniors thrive.

CUSD teachers win Golden Mouse awards

Carlsbad Unified School District teachers Luis Ponce, Amber Mosier and Jeffrey Spanier have won 2008 Golden Mouse Tech Hero Awards from the Technology Training Foundation of America.
The award is given annually to educators in San Diego County who have been instrumental in helping to make a difference in preparing youth for the challenges of our technological world. The teachers will receive 10 refurbished computers from the foundation, which helps bridge the digital divide by accepting and repairing old computers, then donating them to schools and nonprofit corporations.
Ponce is a fifth-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School. Mosier is a math teacher at Carlsbad High School. Spanier is coordinator of the Advancement Via Individual Determination program at Carlsbad High School.

Toyota Carlsbad receives award

Toyota Carlsbad received the Economic Development Leader Award from the San Diego North Economic Development Council during its holiday luncheon Dec. 1.
The winner was chosen based on specific criteria, including revenue growth, number of new employees, innovative product introduction and improved the community by adding to its quality of life. Other Carlsbad businesses were finalists for the award, including Solatube Global Marketing Inc. and Poseidon Resources Corp.
