The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's commitment to the environment was recognized March 10 when Mayor Bud Lewis proclaimed March Sustainability Month in the city of Carlsbad.
Lewis made the declaration due to the chamber's efforts to lead by example by doing green business in the hope that other companies will follow suit.
The proclamation states: Sustainability month will create public awareness and demand for sustainability and its role in the future of Carlsbad, and promote businesses, educational organizations and governments that are currently providing green building and services options for consumers and professionals, or engaging in sustainable practices.
“The city declaring the month of March as Sustainability Month is a testimony to the unity in community concept our two organizations share,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the chamber. “We are supporting the public and the economy, and the city is rewarding us for that.”
The chamber's efforts to be earth friendly include:
• Hosting a green business showcase March 17. The St. Patrick's Day event featured 33 exhibitors and attracted more than 300 people.
• Establishing a Sustainability Committee, which has developed a Green Checklist Certificate that is issued by the chamber to local businesses that meet specific requirements to be certified as socially, environmentally and economically responsible.
• Applying an eco-friendly theme to February's Annual Business Awards Dinner, where special awards were given to individuals and businesses that are stewards of the environment.
• Installing 23 Solatubes in its office building. The chamber plans to have a total of 30 by the end of this year. The Solatubes, which capture sunlight on the rooftop and redirect it down a reflective tube into the building's interior spaces, have reduced the electric bill by 40 percent.
• Recycling paper and plastic products.
• Printing the Carlsbad Business Journal with soy ink.
• Utilizing an electric limiter that moderates the power going to the system by only sending electricity to outlets that are being used.
