McClellan-Palomar Airport is soaring to new heights this year with the celebration of its golden anniversary.
A free community event to commemorate the airport's 50th anniversary will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 27 at the airport, 2192 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad. Parking will be available for free.
The federally funded, 487-acre airport officially turned 50 on March 20. It is one of eight airports and airparks in the county of San Diego airport system.
With 215,847 takeoffs and landings in 2007 by private planes, corporate jets and commuter airline flights, McClellan-Palomar is one of the busiest single-runway airports in the country. There are 344 aircraft based at the airport, 83 of which are jets or jet props.
“Between public and private investment, more than $100 million has been put into McClellan-Palomar Airport over the last five years,” said Airport Manager Willie Vasquez. “We're having this event because we want the public to come and see what has been done.”
The anniversary event will include vendors, food and entertainment for the whole family. Hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, bagels and coffee will be available for purchase.
There will be a variety of aircraft on display, ranging from vintage planes to warbirds to emergency medical helicopters. Tours of the airport will be provided.
Through Orion Aviation, attendees can purchase Discovery Flights of the coast and scenic area surrounding the airport in a Cessna 172 with a qualified flight instructor. Barnstormers also will offer rides for a price in its 1927 Travel Air biplane.
Civic Helicopter will host an open house at its facility, which is across from Western Flight. NRG West, Carlsbad Energy Center will have a booth with activities for kids, including coloring and an interactive aquarium.
Several nonprofit organizations also will have booths at the event, including Angel Flight West, California Pilots' Association, San Diego Chapter, Civil Air Patrol, Discovery Flights, Experimental Aircraft Association, FAA Safety Council, Liga Flying Doctors, Pacific Coast Flyers, Palomar Airport Association, The 99's, Women in Aviation and Young Eagle Flights.
The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is proud to assist the airport with this fun-filled event for the community. For more information, call the chamber at (760) 931-8400.
