MiraCosta vice president receives leadership award
Pam Deegan, vice president of instruction at MiraCosta College, recently received the Carter Doran Leadership Award.
The award recognizes an active instructional administrator who exemplifies leadership. It is named for the late Carter Doran, a longtime secretary for the Chief Instructional Officers organization.
The organization created the award to recognize an instructional services officer who demonstrates the same leadership traits as Carter, including integrity, compassion, kindness, humor, wit, charm, dedication to the common good, devotion to excellence without elitism, generosity with time and loyalty to friends.
Deegan oversees the Instructional Services Department at MiraCosta, administers curriculum, supervises facilities use district-wide, assures compliance with state and federal regulations, oversees academic/administrative computing and encourages transfer/articulation. She also works with faculty, staff and management to continue to improve and serve the higher education needs of the community.

Big John receives optimistic honor
The Optimist Club of Carlsbad "The Achievers" recently presented a special plaque to "Big John" Haedrich, owner of Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad, to express the club's sincere and heartfelt thanks for his generous donations.
The club works with many organizations that benefit youth. One special event is the annual holiday party in December for families who have lost a loved one serving in the United States military.
Haedrich donated to the club's party, as well as many other projects "The Achievers" work on. The club voted to have a special plaque made for Haedrich, who may not be a member of the club, but truly is a genuine optimist and achiever.

Ron King, senior vice president of Carlsbad-based Coldwell Banker Commercial, has been recognized by the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors for the largest dollar volume transaction of the year in 2008.
King, a founding partner of Coldwell Banker Commercial, is the exclusive agent for Seagate Corporate Center in Oceanside. He negotiated a new, 84,000-square-foot medical outpatient clinic for the Veteran's Health Administration at the project in a transaction valued at more than $99.5 million.
It was the largest dollar volume transaction among all of the society's members last year. The society is a major professional commercial and industrial real estate association with more than 3,200 members in more than 590 cities in 25 countries.

Assembly honors E-World Recyclers
The 74th California Assembly district has named E-World Recyclers as its Small Business of the Year.
The award was presented May 26 at the California Small Business Day attended by more than 500 business leaders and legislators.
"I chose to recognize E-World Recyclers because they have developed a business that provides a solution to California's growing electronic waste problem and creates jobs for North County San Diegans," said Assemblyman Martin Garrick, R-Carlsbad.
E-World Recyclers was founded in 2006. The Vista-based company seeks to properly dispose of products, such as computers, fax machines, monitors and television sets.
In the last year alone, E-World Recyclers successfully diverted 9.5 million pounds of electronic waste from California landfills.

Kelly Elementary receives accolades
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recently presented Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad with a check for $1,000 for winning one of its Front Runner Recognition Awards.
Kelly Elementary is one of three San Diego/Imperial schools and one of 29 schools across the state that have been selected for leading the way in engaging students in physical activity as part of the 2009 Governor's Challenge Competition. The competition is a statewide fitness contest among K-12 schools that promotes increased physical activity and better health among California's youth.
The goal of the council is to get Californians of all ages to be more active.

The Cardiovascular Disease Foundation will offer a free community health fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 at the Army and Navy Academy, 2605 Carlsbad Blvd., Carlsbad.
The fun-filled event will feature more than 40 exhibitor booths providing health-related products and services. Free screenings for cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure and body fat will be given by the foundation.
Educational lectures will be provided by physicians and dieticians on topics ranging from nutrition for families to prevention of heart disease. At discovery stations, kids will be able to hold fake fat, listen to their own heart beat and play as they learn the importance adopting good habits.
