Barnett, Hogan join Colliers International

Veteran retail brokers Bill Barnett and Doug Hogan have joined Colliers International.

New ViaSat contracts total $53 million

ViaSat, a maker of satellite equipment, recently won two contracts totaling $53 million to provide satellite communications infrastructure in Africa.
The contracts are with RascomStarQaf, a pan-African satellite operator. Under one contract, ViaSat will deliver equipment for high-capacity telephone and data communications between regional and national capitals. Under the other, ViaSat will provide equipment for rural telecommunications access across the continent.
Carlsbad-based ViaSat employs more than 1,900 people. The company's annual revenues hit a record $628 million during the most recently completed fiscal year, which ended April 3.

West receives Stars of Industry Award

The American Hotel & Lodging Association recently recognized Carlsbad's West Inn and Suites as the Winner of the Best Guest Relations program among all hotels nationwide for small properties with 100 rooms or less.
The association recognized the hotel for its West Signature Service program. It was one of only 11 properties to receive a 2009 Stars of the Industry Award from the association.

Optimist Club doles out scholarships

The Optimist Club of Carlsbad, known as "The Achievers," recently gave out $1,000 scholarships to five hardworking students.
The recipients were Sinjen Povoli of LaCosta Canyon High School, Ariel Perkins of the Carlsbad Village Academy and Shelby Cohantz, Ceasar Lopez and Alejandro Lbaez of Carlsbad High School.
The club strives to provide time and efforts to support many community projects. In addition, the club raises money to benefit the community.

Tri-City names CEO, announces promotion

Last month, Tri-City Healthcare District's board of directors appointed interim CEO Larry Anderson as the hospital's permanent CEO.
Anderson had been serving as interim CEO since January. The board's decision extends Anderson's contract, which had been set to run through October, for an 18-month period.
Also last month, Tri-City promoted Jeff Segall from director of public affairs to vice president of public affairs and marketing. He is now responsible for overseeing the hospital's marketing and advertising initiatives, media relations, Web site, community outreach, sponsorships, partnerships and government affairs.

MiraCosta students help Katrina victims

For the third year in a row, a group of MiraCosta College students and staff traveled to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi to help rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane
Katrina.
Because of the damage from the devastating hurricane of August 2005, more than 6,000 Mississippi residents are still living in FEMA trailers. Of the 64,000 homes destroyed, only 30 percent have been rebuilt.

UltraStar program supports military

Last month, UltraStar Cinemas kicked off a new program called Wounded Warrior Wednesday to support the military.
The program provides any wounded warrior with a card that allows them and a guest free admission to any movie every Wednesday at Mission Marketplace Cinemas, 431 College Blvd, Oceanside.
"UltraStar was born and raised here in San Diego and this is just another way we'd like to show our appreciation for our military," said UltraStar Executive Alan Grossberg.

Bar Association elects Cataldo president

Mary Cataldo, senior counsel at the law firm of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP, has been elected president of the North County Bar Association.
