John Haedrich, owner of Tip Top Meats European Deli in Carlsbad, recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from Supervisor Bill Horn's office for his numerous efforts to support the community.
Haedrich has been involved in the San Diego County 4H Livestock Auction since l992. He attends the animal auction every year to bid on the hogs and cattle raised by the kids in 4H.
On average, he spends about $20,000 or more each year. This year, Haedrich made two separate purchases: One for $20,000 at the Lakeside auction in May and another for $22,000 at the San Diego County Fair.
The money raised at the auctions goes toward college scholarships for the kids in 4H. The hundreds of thousands of dollars Haedrich has gladly donated over the years go a long way toward the college educations of dozens of young men and women who otherwise would not have been able to attend college as easily.
Many of the hogs and cattle he bought were donated to local charities. For example, Haedrich donated eight pigs, which he trimmed and cut into pork chops, to the Camp Pendleton Military Outreach Ministry program that feeds 1,700 Marine and Navy families with food baskets each week.
“John is a dedicated and loyal philanthropist who truly deserves this recognition,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. “This is just one example of the dozens of individual charities and causes he supports every year.”
