This past year, once again the Sustainability Committee has worked to inspire and educate member businesses in the area of green and sustainable practices. We started 2010 with presentations on the USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and our annual Green Business Expo.
At this well attended expo, visitors were treated to yummy foods from the Windmill while they toured the many and varied green business booths. There were an extraordinary number of connections made at this event.
In concert with the Expo, there was a presentation of environmental films, green education, a mobile solar charging station, electric bikes, and exciting alternative vehicles.
Throughout the year committee leadership helped showcase member businesses and their sustainable business programs by using the Chamber's Green Business Checklist, because membership matters! Members from Nordson Asymtek and La Costa Glenn shared their experiences in developing and working with a Green Team in their respective organizations. North County Transit District presented their public transportation technology, solar projects, and LEED-certified Data Center.
The Carlsbad Village Association shared the benefits of hosting local farmers markets, and even hosted the first-ever farmer's market at the Chamber of Commerce. The concept of sustainable food systems ties into many other areas of sustainability, such as energy, water, waste, transportation, security, and community connections. Connections were made at this meeting between a local farmer and the Four Seasons Residence Club food director.
The Sustainability Committee made a commitment to partner with other committees also, and did so by presenting at the Chamber's Technology Committee regarding paperless business practices and technology.
The Technology Committee reciprocated by presenting at the Sustainability Committee on the topic of green meetings technologies. Committee members also participated with the Government Affairs Committee, providing a sustainable business perspective to legislative action affecting business organizations.
Throughout the year, Sustainability Committee members provided articles and reviews for the Carlsbad Business Journal and local TV stations. Members enthusiastically shared resources and further information at every meeting. The committee consistently emphasized the value of civic involvement, and shared and discussed legislative issues of the day at each meeting.
The Sustainability Committee wrapped up this year with the annual Eco Bus Tour of member businesses. Part of sustainability is also about having fun, so this year the committee Eco Bus Tour visited Hubbs Sea World Research Institutue, La Costa Glen, LEGOland California, and Pacific Ridge School.
The Committee achieved its mission to promote a balance between the economy, the ecology, and equity for humankind.
