At Tri-City Wellness Center, we are often asked about membership discounts for corporations. While we are happy to give this information; I am always a bit surprised why more corporate CEOs and CFOs don't ask us what the Return on Investment is for these types of membership programs.
It's easy to say, and true, that there are a multitude of research studies that draw the same conclusion: a healthy workforce leads to increased productivity, decreased health care costs, decreased absenteeism, increased presenteeism, decreased lost work time, decreased injuries, and an increase in overall employee morale.
The numbers supporting a Corporate Wellness program are quite astonishing when you think about it. In a recent study published in the Harvard Business Review, December 2010, “What's the Hard Return on Employee Wellness Programs?” it was reported that Johnson & Johnson's leaders estimate that wellness programs have cumulatively saved the company $250 million on health care costs over the past decade. From 2002 to 2008, the return was $2.71 for every dollar spent.
H-E-B, a large Texas based grocery retailer, conducted an internal analysis that showed $1,500 higher health care claims among nonparticipants in its workplace wellness program than among participants with a high-risk health status.
Tax incentives and grants under recent federal health care legislation will encourage companies to develop more wellness programs to reduce their health care costs.
The authors of the aforementioned study in the Harvard Business Review identified six pillars that support the success of a corporate wellness program. They include Multilevel Leadership, Alignment, Scope, Relevance, and Quality, Accessibility, Partnerships, and Communications.
For the purpose of this article, I will focus on two pillars: Accessibility and Partnerships.
Accessibility refers to the ease of entry for employees in a corporate wellness program. One of the key draws for the Tri-City Wellness Center is that we are so conveniently located in Carlsbad, just off Palomar Airport Road at 6250 El Camino Real. We are moments away from most employers in the Tri-City area.
That means that employees don't have to spend precious time in traffic trying to get to the center. They can use that time for their workout. We are open seven days a week. And for the busy employee who likes to start their day refreshed; we are open at 5:00 AM during the week.
We also have a caf? on site. Hence, a workout and then a healthy breakfast to follow make for a finely tuned employee.
The second pillar, Partnerships, enable corporations to benefit from external competencies (wellness, fitness, dietary counseling, and rehab services) and infrastructure (Tri-City Wellness Center) without extra internal investment.
It's a good business strategy for us to give volume discounts on memberships to large employer groups. It's a better business strategy for a company to encourage their employees to take advantage of everything we have to offer.
Those services include Free daily “Active Education Classes” that focus on nutrition, exercise, posture, back pain, and diabetes just to name a few. We also offer Personal Training (all of our instructors are college degreed and certified), Dietary counseling, Group Exercise, Massage Therapy, Pilates, Aquatic Therapy, Postural Alignment Therapy, Cancer fitness, Physical Therapy, and Cardiac Rehab.
We can also customize a wellness plan and tailor it to meet the specific needs of your employees. For example, if you know that you have a preponderance of employees with back pain; we can work with our Physical Therapy department and our Personal Trainers to set up a class to demonstrate how to help improve core strength and stability. This can be done at the Tri-City Wellness Center or on site at your company.
Our facility is 60,000 square feet and includes: three indoor pools, Jacuzzis, saunas, caf?, pro shop, childcare, two group exercise studios, indoor cycling, an indoor track, cardio conditioning equipment, machine and free weights. We were voted “Best Gym” in San Diego for the past two years.
