On March 19, 2011, we held our second new family-friendly event in Village. It was called Experience the World in the Village, and it was a big hit with the families and others who came to celebrate the Village and world cultures! The Department of Housing and Neighborhood Services together with other city departments, a number of Village businesses and various community partners hosted a fun and safe community event in the Carlsbad Village for the entire family. The event celebrated world cultures through visual performances, hands-on art, food, shopping, games, story-telling and other fun activities.

There were several goals for the event:

• Give Village businesses the opportunity to share their gifts by offering a cultural experience, provide good food to eat, and/or sell retail products or services that highlight the diversity of world gifts offered through local venues.
• Host an event in the Village where families can experience together the wonders of different cultures, music, art, food, and retail products/services.
• Residents and others to enjoy a fun event which highlights the Village and all that it has to offer.
•Place a spotlight on the diversity of Village businesses and customer friendly owners and employees while honoring the heritage of Carlsbad residents and/or encouraging an exploration of other cultures.
Michael Jordan once said, "talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships". Our Experience the World in the Village was a "championship" event appropriately orchestrated during March Madness. A very talented team organized and hosted the event, and through teamwork they successfully experienced a big win. The team deserves a public thank you for their hard work and successful planning. It was a spectacular victory, and here is a special team introduction and thank you provided in the theme of March Madness:

Courtney Enriquez (Housing & Neighborhood Services), our victorious Head Coach & Team Captain

Bridgette Shaver (a city volunteer), our Volunteer Extraordinaire and Point Guard; our "coach on the floor" calling the plays

Jessica Padilla (Library & Arts), our amazing Power Forward; staying close to the basket and taking a lot of layups

Rachel McGuire (Communications), our Small Forward; a well balanced player defending several positions at once

Craddock Stropes (Parks & Recreation), our Shooting Guard; a great ball handler and top outside shooter

Sue Irey (Volunteer Coordinator), our Assistant Coach; bringing in the additional resources and support needed for a win

Tonya Rodzach (Library & Arts), Team Center; plenty of rebounding and winning shots throughout the game
Patty Johnson (Carlsbad Educational Foundation), Role Player or the Sixth Player; doing whatever is necessary to help the team win; a "spark plug,”

A special thank you to all of the other outstanding city staff and amazing volunteers that helped to prepare the Village, set up, and work the event. We had helpers from all areas including Fire, Police, Human Resources, Library & Cultural Arts, Parks & Recreation, Community & Economic Development, Housing & Neighborhood Services, Communications, and Transportation. As always, the Parks Department, with Greg Dauss and his merry staff taking the lead, had the Village looking great! We can't thank all of them enough for their enthusiastic participation in helping us to provide this gift of a family-oriented event to the residents of Carlsbad.

Our awesome presenting partners also need to be thanked and congratulated with enthusiasm. If you know people from these organizations, please give them a big Carlsbad thanks: Carlsbad Educational Foundation, Carlsbad Village Association, and New Village Arts. We were thrilled to have their help in hosting the event.
We were also excited to include the following participants in our event activities: Snyder Design and Art, the Museum of Making Music, Legoland Sea Life Aquarium, Kids for Peace, Kidville, Montessori School of Arts & Sciences, Rhythmworx, the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, and Bad Blokes, a very cool band who played Irish, Scottish and British Rock music.

It was a very fun event, and thanks are given to all who helped with, or attended, the event. It demonstrated again the great power of partnerships and community participation!
