Children frequently come into closer contact with the environment than adults. While allergy symptoms typically begin during childhood; children touch, taste and breathe things without knowing if they are harmful or not. Creating a healthier-green home is an ongoing process that we all have to learn, but it's easier than you think!

A is for Away: Stay AWAY from irritants that often trigger allergies, such as products made of feathers or down. Use hypoallergenic pillows, and limit exposure to perfume, hair spray, air fresheners, fabric softeners or other strong odors or sprays. Strong fragrances and odors may aggravate allergy symptoms, so be sure those prone to allergies are not in the house when spraying fragrances or using strong cleaning products. Always store hazardous products AWAY from children's reach, preferably in a locked cabinet or on a high shelf.

B is for Be-Careful: Minimize allergens by keeping the windows shut during high-pollen seasons to help protect your family from pollen particles that trees, grasses and weeds release into the air. BE-CAREFUL, these particles can harbor in the eyes, nose, and airways, causing allergy symptoms to flair for those allergic to pollen. If you have children, washable, non-allergenic stuffed toys are a great option; be sure to wash the ones played with the most on a weekly basis, in hot water. Be-CAREFUL with moisture problems; when moisture problems are visible, we often take remedial action quickly. Unfortunately, some moisture problems are not readily known. Moisture migrates into wall, roof, or floor and results in mold or mildew growth, in places that are not visible.

C is for Consider: CONSIDER changing items that are easy to neglect but are important for maintaining a healthier home, such as leaky faucets, pipes and other high moisture areas that are common places for mold growth. Change your whole-house furnace filter every three months and if you have carpet in the home, vacuum it often and thoroughly, and have your carpets cleaned before summer. Use a green oxygenated cleaning method that leaves no sticky reside and is safe for your family.

It is a reality that children are more susceptible to the adverse effects of the toxins caused by chemicals used, or unknowingly surrounding us in our own homes. Therefore, it's up to us as parents and guardians, to do all we can to reduce their exposure and the adverse consequences of said toxins. Your ABC guide, it's the beginning of a journey to making our children's home environment a healthier and safer one.
