Breakout sessions, including one on how to conduct business with government entities, and a new, elegant venue at the La Costa Resort and Spa are some of the changes those who attend the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's 2011 Business Expo can expect.
The Expo will take place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 at the resort's Costa Del Sol Ballroom, 2100 Costa Del Mar Road, which at 18,000 square feet is North County's largest ballroom.
About 100 companies are expected to participate in the 21st edition of the event, which allows members to showcase their goods and services to the public at large and to other businesses.
The Business Expo is one of the Chamber's most anticipated community events, in which vendors may introduce new products and services, connect with their loyal customers and make new ones.
Sometimes, those new customers turn out to be not only members of the public, but also participating businesses, noted Bev Jorgensen, the Chamber's vice president of corporate and member relations, who added that the event is a great place for business-to-business interactions.
"A lot of great connections happen between the exhibitors themselves," said Jorgensen. "While you get a lot of traffic and people coming from the outside, you will also see a lot of networking going on between the exhibitors."
Jorgensen added that the chamber encourages these connections by facilitating an on-site networking event for participating Business Expo exhibitors. The fast-paced, fun exchange allows one representative from each exhibitor to spend a minute networking with a representative from all of the other participants.
The full list of breakout sessions, which will be open to the public, was still being finalized as of press time, but Caltrans will be hosting the session on how to do business with the government. Other possible breakout sessions could include topics such as healthcare, home improvements and hospitality.
There's still time to register for the Business Expo. Through July 15, registration is $299 for chamber businesses and $199 for 501(c)3 nonprofit members (although only a dozen nonprofit spaces are available). From July 16 through Aug. 15, the price goes up to $349 for chamber members and $249 for nonprofits. (There is an additional $50 fee for electricity, which has limited availability.) The La Costa Resort and Spa will also host the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's September Sundowner during the expo, from 5-7 p.m.
Jorgensen said the event will be a good way for businesses to celebrate their success, even in the face of a tough economy.
"Businesses want to let people know that they're still in business," Jorgensen said. "Times have been tough, but right now these businesses have survived and they are thriving. This is just a way for them to let people know they're still up and running."
