Over a year ago, the streetlight banner program in the Carlsbad Village area was expanded to celebrate art, people and places as well as the Village itself.
There are currently decorative banners in the Village that recognize all of the current opportunities, such as dining, shopping, entertainment, and free public parking.
In partnership with the Cultural Arts Office, large banners to showcase outdoor art were also installed on Grand Avenue, between Roosevelt and State streets, to continue the celebration of the growing market for arts and related entertainment in the Village.
These large banners share the art of middle school students in Carlsbad, known as Healing Waters. They are beautiful, colorful and very enjoyable to view while strolling down tree-lined Grand Avenue.
Residents and private property owners can also partner with the City to install banners that honor historical landmark buildings and our military heroes.
Private parties may financially sponsor the creation and installation of banners to honor historical landmark buildings within the Village Area.
The Army Navy Academy sponsored six banners to highlight their historic landmark buildings. These banners were installed on streetlight poles in front of the academy on Carlsbad Boulevard. Also, the Historical Society purchased a banner to honor Magee House.
This unique banner program is designed to highlight and celebrate landmark historical structures in Carlsbad Village in partnership with private sponsors. The structures chosen to participate in this program have stood the test of time and are an important part of the history of the Village. The current property owner or a private organization may financially sponsor the banners. It is anticipated that these new banners will remain up for at least a year. No commercial advertising will be allowed on these banners. However, a commercial establishment may sponsor them.
Carlsbad residents may financially sponsor or celebrate a military hero through display of a banner in the Village in his or her honor.
This banner program is designed to honor our local military heroes who reside in the City of Carlsbad or have an immediate family member who resides in Carlsbad.
In order to qualify, the military hero to be displayed must be a member of the United States Armed Forces, a resident of the City of Carlsbad or have an immediate family member who is sponsoring the banner and resides in the city. Banners may be displayed for a minimum of one year before being retired and given to the hero or the celebrated hero's family.
The military heroes may be currently serving, or may have lost their life during their military service.
Recently, the neighbors of a fallen soldier financially sponsored the creation and installation of a banner to honor the service of Lt. Col. Mario Carazo.
Carazo was a Marine helicopter pilot who served his country for almost 20 years. He was shot down in Afghanistan on July 22, 2010.
The banner for Lt. Col. Carazo was purchased by his friends and neighbors who live at Cavern Place in Carlsbad. The banner hangs proudly for all to see on a streetlight on Roosevelt Street.
A special reception was recently held for the neighbors and the family to enjoy the unveiling of the banner, and to share their pride and love for their fallen hero. The City hopes this banner will very soon be one of many banners in the Village to celebrate our military friends and family members. The banner is of outstanding quality, and provides a unique way for friends and family to pay tribute to a military hero. The banner truly represents a heart-felt gift to our military.
