In May of 2011, Carlsbad and Vista Dermatology welcomed its first patients from Carlsbad, Vista, and San Marcos. The practice is headed by long-time Carlsbad resident and dog lover Dr. Vu Nguyen. It offers general dermatologic services, specializing in skin cancers, moles, acne and warts; rashes such as psoriasis and eczema/atopic dermatitis; and other skin growths and conditions.
Carlsbad and Vista Dermatology is in the Premier Crossing medical complex at the junction of Vista, Carlsbad, and San Marcos, in a brand new one story facility surrounded by windows and natural light. The decor and furnishings are unique to a physician's office, because a home interior decorator oversaw this aspect of the project. It is elegant, simple, comfortable and Zen-like. The art-work is that of the famous photographer Peter Lik, which is poignant and tranquil. Patients have often remarked that the setting of the suite contribute greatly and positively to their experience during their visit. Underneath the simple elegance, the suite offers the latest in technology, including Wi-Fi, electronic medical records, streaming music throughout the suite, a state of the art medical waste disposal system and a sophisticated phototherapy unit to treat rashes and conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo. All of these features enhance patients' experience during their visit, and also optimize the quality of their care. There is more than ample off-street parking in front of, and also a large parking lot immediately adjacent to the facility. The building is wheelchair accessible.
"While our office suite is elegant and comfortable, what makes Carlsbad and Vista Dermatology special is our staff members, who strive to take care of each of our patients the way they would a family member," Nguyen said. "We make every effort and take every step possible to provide the best quality of care for our patients, and that philosophy resonates with every person here at our clinic. For us, it is an honor to have our patients entrust their health to our care, and the health of their family members and friends when they refer their loved ones to us."
At Carlsbad and Vista Dermatology, Dr. Nguyen is all about patients and all about dermatology. At home, he is all about his dogs.
Carlsbad residents may have seen Dr. Nguyen out with his enormous "furry kids". He shares his home and his love with two Newfoundland dogs, who also happen to be famous show dogs. While he was in Philadelphia, Dr. Nguyen met a beautiful Newfoundland at a dog park. Soon after he moved to Carlsbad, a Newfoundland puppy named Lance joined his household. Dr. Nguyen knew nothing about dog shows, but before getting this puppy he had promised Lance's breeder that if Lance "turns out nicely", then he would be shown. Well, Lance grew into a sweet and beautiful 150 pound dog. He finished his Championship quickly, and became the first Newfoundland ever to become a Grand Champion. He has also won multiple specialty shows. To date, his most significant achievements in the show rings are to win Best of Breed at the 2011 Westminster Kennel Club show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and a few months earlier the Eukanuba/AKC Championship in Long Beach. Lance got his 15 minutes of fame when he was on TV for these wins. When patients show an interest in dogs, Dr. Nguyen is proud to show them a painting of Lance which which is displayed in his office.
Not to be outdone, Dr. Nguyen's younger Newfoundland, Lucas, has also shown that he has what it takes to be a show dog. Lucas is also a Grand Champion, and has won multiple specialty shows. At the recent annual National Newfoundland show in Michigan, Lucas was awarded the prize for the best stud dog, beating many famous older dogs from several famous kennels around the country.
To know a Newfoundland is to know that they are a benevolent, kind, and gentle breed. They are often known as the gentle giants. Newfoundlands were bred in their native land to perform hard work and to save the lives of those who are drowning. Perhaps this is why Dr. Nguyen identifies with the heart of this wonderful breed. As a physician, he too is dedicated and committed to the performance of his duties and to the well being of his patients.
Dr. Nguyen received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed all of his training, including internship and residency in Dermatology, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a subspecialty fellowship in Dermatopathology there, and is Board-certified in both Dermatology and Dermatopathology. After completing his training, Dr. Nguyen moved to Carlsbad. He was on staff at Scripps in both the Departments of Dermatology and Pathology. Three years ago, he joined the staff at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he headed Dermatology and Dermatopathology with Mission Internal Medical Group. During this time, he noticed that the cities of Carlsbad, Vista, and San Marcos, were underserved in terms of dermatologic care. He proceeded to open CVDerm to provide much-needed skin care to the area. Carlsbad and Vista Dermatology is located in the Premier Crossing medical plaza at Melrose and Sycamore in Visa.
