Carlsbad airlines clears first hurdle for air carrier certification
California Pacific Airlines, looking to operate from the McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, has received the first in a series of Federal Aviation Administration clearances required for certification as a commercial air carrier.
President and Chief Operating Officer Lawrence A. "Bud" Sittig said the company has received an FAA status update, approving the airline's general maintenance and operating manuals.
Sittig said the next step will be a thorough manual review by the FAA certification team. That process is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The review process includes oral examinations of CPAir management and operational personnel to determine their response to service and flight operations. Test and training flights, with FAA officials on board, are expected to begin in January. Much of the training will include CPAir crews performing various in-flight tasks while flying to the various proposed destination cities, all without passengers.
The entire certification process is expected to be complete by early to mid-spring.
Founded in 2009, by San Diego North entrepreneur and CEO Ted Vallas, California Pacific will serve five western cities with daily, non-stop flights. The cities include: San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Current plans call for commencing operations in March or April with three Embraer 170 twin-jet airliners.

ViaSat satellite launch pushed to mid-October
ViaSat Inc. announced that the launch of the ViaSat-1 high-capacity satellite, which was previously set for the end of September, is now scheduled for mid-October. The delay is due to the launch failure of the Russian Federal Mission with the Express AM4 communication satellite that occurred on Aug. 18.
Immediately after the failure of the Russian Federal Proton mission with the Express AM4 satellite, the Russian Inter-Agency Commission conducted a formal investigation into the cause of the failure. The Inter-Agency Commission identified the cause of the Express AM4 failure as a configuration error in the flight control software of the Proton Breeze-M upper stage. Following that investigation, Roscosmos lifted the ban on Proton/Breeze M launch processing during the last week of August and appropriate recommendations have been prepared for implementation on upcoming launches.
The satalite arrived at the ILS launch base on Sept. 15.
The high-capacity Ka-band spot beam satellite has planned coverage over North America and Hawaii, enabling a variety of new, high-speed broadband services for WildBlue in the U.S. and Xplornet in Canada. With a capacity estimated at 150 Gbps, ViaSat-1 will become the highest capacity satellite in the world once it is safely on orbit. For more information visit

AARP: Scripps best employer for workers over 50
Scripps Health is the No. 1 company on the 2011 AARP Best Employers for Workers 50 and Older, and the first California-based employer to be selected as the top employer in the decade-long program.
"We are very proud of AARP's selection of Scripps as number one in the country. This validates all of our efforts to be a great place to work and a great place to receive medical care," said Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health president and CEO. "We value all of our employees and each person provides enormous value to our organization and patients regardless of age. But there is something special about our more senior members of the team as they bring both education and experience to the job."
Scripps Health, with five hospital campuses and 23 outpatient clinics, has been honored by AARP seven times over the past decade. In addition to an array of alternative work arrangements such as flex-time, a phased retirement program, and a formal job rotation program, Scripps has a strong wellness program and generous health benefits for employees under and over age 65.
The health system has designed a "phased retirement" program that assists employees from age 55 to 70 as they move toward retirement. At the same time, Scripps maintains an ongoing relationship with retirees to facilitate their return if future job opportunities develop.
Scripps unseated Cornell University, which placed second this year, for the top honors. Cornell has been named the AARP's top U.S. employer for workers 50 and older for the past two consecutive years.
The top 10 Best Employers this year will be profiled in the November issue of AARP The Magazine.
For a full list and more information on the 2011 Best Employers, please go to www.aarp.org/bestemployers. The website includes background on each employer's workforce practices and a description of the selection process.
