I can't believe we are already in the second month of 2014! We have already had one successful Sundowner at Miguel's with more than 150 attendees and the first Coffee Connection of the year brought out 33 business owners. Each committee that has met so far has had record number of members participating. We are off to a great start!

At the meetings, I teach about how to properly network, we actually prefer to call it Netweaving, an idea and book written by Bob Littell. As you start coming to Chamber events, here are my best ideas to help you along the way to being successful.

Defined, Netweaving is "helping others FIRST. . .Without concern for how they will benefit, but with the confidence to know that somewhere down the road, 'what goes around', does come back around."

So as you go around the room at our networking events, don't think about what the rest of our members can do for you, think of how you can be of service to those you are about to meet. Believe me, it works.

When you meet someone at an event, use it as an opportunity to get to know them. Find out what you may have in common with them. Don't try to sell them anything. Begin to establish a relationship by listening. Please don't be a card-pusher, or send mass e-mails based on the business cards that you have received. Remember to put that "me-first" mindset away.

Instead, become a resource for others without expecting anything in return. It eventually comes back to you. Down the road, someone will remember you when they know of someone who requires the products or services that you offer.

One thing I'd like to ask of you is this: if Netweaving works for you because of the Carlsbad Chamber, please let me know about it! One thing we want to do in this space is to give our members the opportunity to show how the Chamber has helped them.

I look forward to seeing our members and prospective members in the coming months as your chamber works to create a strong local economy, promote the community, providing networking opportunities and professional development, and representing business before government-advocating on behalf of your business and the business community.

We want to be the Chamber that listens, so if you have pearls of wisdom, a need and/or a concern, please feel free to share with me. My email is [email protected] or you can reach me at 760-931-8400 ext. 216.
