Tree auction to benefit injured Marines
The Park Hyatt Aviara Resort continues its tradition of raising money for the Semper Fi Injured Marine Fund this holiday season with the Festival of Trees, a silent auction of professionally-decorated trees.
The event, which allows hotel guests and local visitors to place bids on 10 professionally-trimmed trees that will be displayed in the hotel lobby, will be held Nov. 29 through Dec. 29. In the past, winners have bid as high as $3,000 to take one of the trees home.
The resort is seeking sponsors to help "present" the trees. Packages are $1,500 for sponsors and $750 for cosponsors, with 100 percent of the net proceeds forwarded to the Semper Fi Foundation. Sponsorship deadline is Nov. 17. To reserve a sponsorship, contact Gigi Knowles at [email protected] or call 760-603-6867.

Carlsbad Surgery Center event provides care for uninsured
In conjunction with the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation's program Project Access San Diego, Carlsbad Surgery Center hosted a community outreach event to benefit residents of San Diego's North County on Saturday August 27, 2011, at their facility located at 6121 Paso Del Norte in Carlsbad.
The event provided pro bono surgical procedures during the first in a series of several such events targeted to fulfill surgical needs for those less fortunate during the current challenging economic conditions.
Carlsbad Surgery Center, one of four outpatient surgical centers located in San Diego managed by Surgery One, contributed staffing, facility, equipment and supplies in support of Dr. Adam Fierer and the five patients he assisted through donated surgeries. Four out of the five patients helped required hernia surgery, and one had her gallbladder removed.
"The patients were all in great need of abdominal surgery to restore their health, return to work and care for their families," CEO Scott Leggett said.
Cecilia Piementel had suffered with pain for more than 10 years, and needed a hernia belt just to walk around.
"I am so grateful to Dr. Fierer and everyone at the surgery center," Piementel said. "I am looking forward to being able to walk without pain and take better care of myself."
With an increase in the number of area residents who have no health insurance due to rising premium costs, reduced employment benefits and increasing unemployment, those who need specialty healthcare services have few options.
The US Census Bureau reports that 27 percent of California adults under age 65 were uninsured in 2009. The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation's Project Access San Diego has assisted more than 900 patients with specialty care since the program's inception in early 2009, and the need continues to rise.
Leggett aspires to schedule on-going Surgery Saturdays with Project Access to increase the capacity of the Medical Society Foundation meet urgent needs.

"Her passion and knowledge of California history make her an exemplary docent. Karen's can-do and enthusiastic spirit make her a go-to volunteer for a wide variety of tasks." Cowles will be honored at the Volunteer luncheon by the North County Philanthropy Council in November.
The AHLF and Discovery Center serve a vital role in the North County area as stewards of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. As the impacts of development continue to encroach on the remaining wetlands and wildlife of our beautiful region, the Lagoon Foundation strives to educate about the importance of maintaining the beauty and vitality of our lagoon while ensuring a balance of recreational opportunities.
The AHLF has an innovative and cooperative school program between North County schools and the AHLF, designed to awaken in our children the need to appreciate and care for the natural environment. They provide hands-on field trips, which stress responsible interaction with our natural surroundings and create awareness of the impact of day-to-day human activities. Aside from the School Program, they hold numerous festivals and lectures throughout the year on environmental topics, providing families with free or low-cost, fun and educational events.
