On Oct. 29, the Village again celebrated Halloween with good, old-fashioned fun. The Halloween on Elm event kicked off the holiday celebrations in grand style when an estimated 10,000 ghosts, goblins, pirates, princesses and more creatively costumed children, their parents and pets filled up the Village. This was the second year for this free community event hosted by the City of Carlsbad and its community partners, and it was a big hit again!
There was a fabulous costume contest where a Fish Taco won in the adult category, an Alice in Wonderland who was too large for her house won in the children's category, and a dog dressed as an Emperor Penguin won the pet category. Amazing creativity and talent in this community!
More than 40 Village businesses participated by handing out candy, hosting events such as face painting and a scary path, and many had specials for their spooky customers and decorated their storefronts. It was a very festive day full of fun such as magic storytelling, games, music, jump houses, and the Halloween Buccaneer Pirate Show.
Special thanks to our community partners and city departments who hosted activities at the event, which included: Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad, Carlsbad Automotive Technology, Boy Scout Troop #708, Carlsbad Country Day School, Carlsbad Village Association, Excel Dental, Farmers, Kahoots Pet Store in Carlsbad, Kelsall & Associates, Key Club, and Knockout Pizzeria. City Departments included: Property and Environmental Management, Utilities, Community and Economic Development, Parks and Recreation, Police, Fire, Library and Cultural Arts, Housing and Neighborhood Services, and the City Manager's Office.
The behind the scenes effort to get ready for the big event was also awesome. Huge thanks to the Carlsbad Educational Foundation for serving on our planning team, and hosting activities at the event! And, last but definitely not least, thanks to the following who donated prizes for our costume contest: Homewood Suites by Hilton Carlsbad, Kahoots Pet Store, and the Sea Life Aquarium.
The reviews are in and the response all agree that the event was great.
One of our happy families wrote afterwards and said, "I attended the event with my husband and four children this year and I must say that we had a GREAT time!! I was very impressed with the event (especially the location, mostly on state street) and how well organized and staffed it was! The best part was that it was all FREE! Having a family of 6 can be very costly at times … We truly love old-fashioned family fun and at times it's hard to find! THANK YOU for all your hard work in putting this together."
Thanks to everyone that assisted with this great event. It was a wonderful gift to the community, and demonstrated how a variety of different organizations could work together successfully to host a fun-filled day for the families of Carlsbad. The community helped us to kick off the holiday in grand style. We look forward to celebrating the remainder of the holidays with as much fun.
Don't forget to shop the Village for all your gift needs this holiday season. Come and walk the Village, and have some fun eating, shopping, and being entertained and served with a smile in the charming downtown of Carlsbad.
