Tri-City Healthcare District awards $300k in community grants
The Tri-City Healthcare District recently awarded $300,000 to 23 North County nonprofits, including The Angel's Depot, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad and North County Health Services.
The grants were announced at the district's board of directors June 28 meeting.
North County Health Services was among the nonprofits that received grants from the healthcare district. It was awarded $7,500 to assure access to care for low-income, uninsured children with asthma.
The projects that were funded address three of the region's most critical health needs: access to care, mental health, and conditions related to lifestyle, including diabetes, childhood obesity, and nutrition. Proposals were solicited from nonprofits serving the residents of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista.
"We received many extraordinary proposals," said committee chairwoman Charlene Anderson of the TCHD Board of Directors, "and we are pleased and proud to know that so much good will be done as a result of these grants."
Each year, funds are allocated by the district's board of directors to be used in a competitive grant process for nonprofits. Grant applications are evaluated by a volunteer committee of district residents.
ViaSat scores Australian contracts
ViaSat announced that it has been choosen to be the satellite provider for two large projects in Australia, including a $240 million-plus project that will help bridge the digital divide across the island country.
After a two-year procurement process, NBN Co., which is building a wholesale-only national broadband network (NBN) designed to deliver high-speed Internet to all Australians, has chosen Carlsbad-based ViaSat to provide the ground-based communications, network management and data processing systems for the long-term satellite service component of the project.
The initial value of the contract is in excess of $240 million, which is expected to increase as the network is built out to reach up to 200,000 homes and businesses. ViaSat is under contract to supply consumer satellite terminals, including broadband modems and antennas for Australian homes and businesses, and 13.5-metre diameter Ka-band satellite antennas for ten ground station gateway facilities across Australia. The contract award follows a comprehensive, two-year procurement process by NBN Co.
Separately, the Commonwealth of Australia Department of Defence (ADF) selected ViaSat to supply the UHF Satellite Communication (Satcom) Mission System for its recently-launched UHF capacity on Intelsat IS-22. The system is designed to provide voice and data military satellite communicatiosn covering a region from the west coast of Africa to the east coast of Australia. The value of the award to ViaSat is approximately $35 million.
"The Network Control System will use satellites in the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions to support the resource sharing partnership with the United States," said Stephen Smith, Australia Minister for Defence. "The NCS will become a critical component for UHF communications for ADF personnel operating in the Middle East."
Partnering with Australian industry, ViaSat is responsible for providing a complete UHF Network Control System that includes system architecture, design, development, integration and test, site preparation, equipment procurement and installation, and ongoing support. The system is also designed to include the Integrated Waveform (IW) for channel control and network terminals, enabling an increase in channel efficiency and available bandwidth.
"I think our ability to deliver IW capability is the significant reason we were chosen for this award," said Jerry Goodwin, VP Business Development at ViaSat. "That technology is something we feel is important to maintaining a leadership position in global UHF satcom systems and services."
