The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad are launching "The Armory," an on-campus club at Carlsbad High School.

The teen program is available at no charge Monday through Thursday, from the end of school until 6 p.m. Each day will have a different focus including tutoring with volunteers from Cal State San Marcos, Palomar and Mira Costa Colleges; community service featuring projects that can be used to satisfy each student's requirement for community service hours; and intramural sports including softball, ultimate Frisbee, dodge ball and tennis.

In addition, all members will be eligible to participate in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad's "Youth of the Year" competition. The winner receives a $10,000 college scholarship.

"The teen years are a critical time in a young adult's life," explains Teen Director Abby Snyder. "They are old enough to be at home alone, but that's when many get into trouble. Transportation between school and our Club is an issue, so we are going to provide a Boys & Girls Club right on the Carlsbad High campus. We intend to give teens the opportunity to participate in our life-changing programs at a location that is convenient for them."

Abby added that the club plans to eventually expand the program to Sage Creek High School.
